First Post! #SOTC 2023

New member, first Post, and a newbie watch guy! I've spent the majority of this year falling well deep into the rabbit hole!

I've bought a couple 'fun' watches along the way, just to see what I'd like and let my tastes grow as I learned more. There's also an in depth spreadsheet with another 40-odd watches...

Next year's goal is to buy fewer watches, but more substantial ones, as I'll be pairing it with a career change (I'm looking at you Lorier, Hamilton, and Tissot)!

From top left to right:

  • Citizen J304-S037671 World Time

  • Casio A168WA-1W

  • Vostok Komandirskie 216289

  • Salden - 1930s Trench Watch (vintage)

  • Casio F91WS-2DF

  • Casio AE-1200WHB-3B

  • Sugess Heritage Chrono SU1901OS

Looking through my wishlist, it looks like there's bit of a pattern 😁 I'm drawn to coloured dials, many of them with sunburst effects.

Orient has a really nice sunburst red/burgundy color dial. My brother has an Orient and it’s really nice.

Welcome and love that Sugess Chronograph

I've looked at some of the Orient Kamasu and Bambino options, they are nice! I've got a spreadsheet of options for next year, there's a few potential milestones coming up, so lots of sunburst options 😂

What does that mean?

The little Salden looks interesting. 👍

The little Salden looks interesting. 👍

I found that one locally; seller gave me a 'I received it from a friend's uncle' type story. No service history, and no other information other than that it was manufactured around 1932/33. I've had it verified and checked at the local watch maker and they've said all it needs is a clean and lubrication. Otherwise it's still in beautiful shape! (Can't afford the service just yet, but that's another story)

Love the vintage pieces in your collection! It reminded me that I'm still hunting for a Roamer Vanguard with the 6, 9, 12 roman numerals on the dial!

Yea I've noticed 😂 I've come to an agreement with my wife: we both get pocket money out of our income every couple weeks. I can only pursue this watch thing using that. Not our savings, not our daily account, nothing. A very good failsafe against the deep deep rabbit hole this would have become otherwise 😂

That’s exactly how my wife and I do it. It’s a good way to rein in my spending, which otherwise might get out of hand since I fall in love with a new watch every other week. Also, it helps keep my purchases more intentional and less impulsive; if I buy a watch, it must be one that I really want. I’m currently in the mode of saving up for one and trying to resist temptation everywhere I look.

Warm welcome 👍

Nice way to start off👍

Thank you! 😁 Now that I've had some time to consider and think and learn, there's a small part of me that's conflicted about some of the 'cheaper' pieces. For example, I'm a little doubtful about the F91W, and the Salden, as moving forward I'm really looking at more 'substantial' watches. Part of me is thinking, just get rid of them. The rest of me goes, 'no way, they're a part of the journey, just buy another watch box!' 😂 have you encountered this before?

I think most of us who've started off at the bottom end of the price spectrum will know this feeling. The more you learn about the world of watches, the higher you set your sights. There's no shame in ditching some of your cheapest watches, if they just aren't doing it for you, but at the same time it's easy to look at those cheap pieces and convince yourself they don't pass muster, just because of their price - I've done that, and regretted it!. I'm lucky enough to own a number of watches which I'd regard as expensive, but I still love my Vostock Amphibia and my little Orient ***. My only piece of advice would be to not rush things, and to follow your own likes and dislikes and not be too influenced by others, and your tastes WILL change and change again, over time.

Thanks for the advice! I still have a good 50 to 60 years left in me (🤞), so plenty of time to evolve, change, streamline, expand, etc etc. And you're right, the more involved I get in this hobby, the more I read, and talk to people, the higher I set my sights. But somehow that shouldn't discount some of the 'fun, cheap, colourful, and cheerful' pieces along the way!

Somewhere on here I saw a story about a guy that spent this year downsizing. From 200 pieces to just 9! 😂
