Review: Appetite Sated, Thirst Slaked; For How Long?

As some of you fine people know, I have recently acquired a Glycine Airman, ref GL0156. It was my 15th acquisition of the year (recommendation: don't make your collection's theme 'Wristwatch History of your Lifetime', LOL), and my first ever Swiss watch.

After wearing it for a week, I don't know when it's coming off the wrist.

The 44mm case w/ a 53.6mm L2L wears great on my 7.5" (19cm) wrist with the turn down lugs. It's so comfortable, I've only taken it off when sleeping or working on the MIL's lawn tractor.

The hands are super legible with the hour hand being visibly shorter & a tiny bit broader than the minute hand, which reaches all the way to the minute markers on the outside of the dial and just kissing them. The seconds hand is great with the slight lollipop at the end.

The movement has been keeping excellent time in the week I've had it. While I have not tested the accuracy, if it's lost or gained any time during the last week, that amount is under 30 seconds.

As I have worn it all week, I am not sure what my power reserve is.

Finishing on the case & bracelet look good, transitions between polished chamfers & brushed surfaces look clean & tight.

Lume lasts all night when charged. It's very legible, but not overwhelmingly bright.

The 'crown' at the 4 o'clock position is simply a set screw to secure the bezel where you've placed it. All of the setting of the watch are handled by the crown at the traditional 3 o'clock position.

The manual winding is smooth and the crown clicks to the setting positions nicely once it is unscrewed. It also hacks when pulled out to the 3rd position.

The things I think could be done better on the watch for the price they are going for (not the "MSRP") are few and minor. I would like the GMT hand to have some color and maybe an arrow tip as it can get lost under the minutes hand and the date window needs to be the tiniest bit bigger. The numbers inside it feel a bit cramped. The date window does have a nice dimension to it though, with a slight rabbet surrounding it.

All in all, a great watch and for the price I paid, I really cannot complain at all.

As far as the post title goes, this watch really has put the kibosh on the hunger for a new watch; for now. I've killed all eBay searches and I do not find myself lusting after any other currently attainable watches at the moment; even the $30 digitals that would fill spots in the collection. Maybe I need to re-visit my theme?

There is the Grail, of course; but for now, it's out of reach. Even then, if I suddenly found enough cash to buy the Grail, I'm not so sure that it would be an instant buy as things stand. Weird, considering I've averaged 2 watches a month for the past 6-7 months. Maybe I should have just bought this watch six months ago, but where's the fun & adventure in that?

Great Review, tons of detail, and I like the watch. Interested to read a part 2 after 30 - 60 days. Looks like an easy watch to love for a long time. Congrats!

·

Great watch buddy, can see why you love wearing it so much. Definitely would feel the same if I had one, enjoy your watch 👌

·

great review man, been writing on my own glycine review when you post 😃

·

Great review to read. So glad you are enjoying the watch 👍

·

Awesome review and congrats on that pick up. Sometimes a watch happens to surprise once in hand and appears to have a home for a while.

·

Nice review sir. The airman is a truly interesting watch.

·

This is such a class watch.  I wish I had the wrist for it.

·

Enjoy that feeling for as long as you can!! We all know it well 🙂

Beautiful piece.

·

Great dial color, it really works well with the color of the steel. I had no idea about the crown at 4. I guessed it turned the internal chapter ring, really cool watch!

·

Excellent!! Dude very happy for you! I for one found a watch that didn’t satiate the hunger it just triggered it more…the more I see watches I‘m falling in love with them again…Enjoy your watch and congrats again!! 🍻

Nice review - selling my Airman 8 is one of my few flipping regrets.

Thank you and we've all got at least one, right?

Great review and very nice looking unique looking time piece. I bet the lume must look in the dark.

·

I agree about the need for color on the GMT hand. I own an Airman No. 1 and my main complain is that it's too easy to confuse between the minutes and GMT hands.

·

Love that piece. I own the all lume dial version. Great watch. Some people may be able to find this model at Costco. Mine in the Pacific NW has some Glycine in the case!

·

Enjoy your new acquisition -- I love my DC-4.

Interesting review - many years ago I was longing for an airman, so I’ve known about the watch for decades now

More important though : what is the as yet unattainable grail watch 😃???
