Calling on London

My wife is leaving to go to London for work and has offered to go to watch stores for trophy husband. Lucky guy! My questions for the WC is

Any advantages to buying watches in Europe versus the United States ?

I love vintage watches any place in London recommended for vintage watches?

Any advice to give to someone traveling to Europe with a watch purchase in mind?

What is a solid English watch maker? Any flagship stores I should sent her to ?

Thank you for any thoughts and opinions

Harrods has their exclusive Tudor Black Bay model. Other than that, given the taxes involved, you’re probably better off buying your watches in the States. Anything over $800 needs to be declared for customs and import duties paid on it.

The infamous West End has any and every designer and luxury brand you can think of so I’m sure you’ll be able to find all the ADs you want. New Bond Street, Sloane Street and Harrods are a good starting point.

What is a solid English watch maker? If Bremont is to your taste, they likely qualify and have a good presence in the UK. As others have said, London has an abundance of watch dealers. Vintage may be a bit more tricky - browsing is good in Burlington Arcade (but pricey), possibly also around Hatton Garden, but maybe less suitable if it is for her own browsing pleasure, rather than to buy something specific. The new boutiques in Battersea Power Station (and the centre generally) are well worth a visit.

Thank you very much. The locations are helpful. She will be shopping for me for watches. Bremont is great!

In Sweden have we the possibility to not pay any custom IF we simply wear the watch (and maybe not keep the box) when we return home... At least was it like that before!

I'm going to be in London for a weekend in May and was wondering the same thing. Where should I do some watch shopping?

Many thanks

Fantastic! Thanks

<Downer alert> If anything is purchased from any major AD in London, take a cheap supermarket bag and hide the purchase in it. We have lots of street crime in town at the moment and eyes and wits should be open at all times esp with a major thing like a 'look at me posh watch shop bag' </Downer alert>

I bought my Pelagos there last week. An impressive mall and some really nice watch shops!

For vintage, last time I was in London in 2019 I really enjoyed my visit here. Nice people. https://antiquewatchuk.co.uk/ I just wandered in off the street but it looks like they're now appointment only.

·
ThanksTom

Kibble Watches are based just above them (if you want some slightly more modern stuff). Or if you’ve seen him on youtube. Appointment only via the website.

As others have mentioned before, the newly re-opened Battersea Power Station has quite a few boutiques in there (with the exception of Swatch - they’re all run by WoS, I believe). An Uber boat will take you straight to the pier there

Bond Street.

In Bond Street you get one branded shop after another. If you want a Breitling you go to the Breitling shop, if you want an IWC there is an IWC shop, etc. You kind of have to know in advance what you want which IMHO defeats the purpose of having a brick&mortar shop. I hate these one-brand fashion shops.

Yes, you can walk out and on to the next shop. Some people may enjoy that style of shopping. I find it about as excruciating as going into a restaurant, sitting down, having a look at the menu and then decide to have lunch elsewhere.

OK, you could go to Wempe instead - not sure what their selection is in this context.

Chris Ward has their shop in Maidenhead, not to far out of London and are a solid UK brand .
