Back to basic

beginning to like smaller watches, am I alone?

Good to see another convert, if anything I'd say you're late to the party. Check out what brands have been doing over the last few months to a year or so. Many have reduced sizes of existing pieces or introduced new mid size pieces in the 36-38mm range.

Yes, I begin to see Panerai, Omega, and now Tudor reducing sizes of their popular models .

There is a trend in the whole market and culture of watches towards smaller watches. I don't mind, I prefer a more practical size. And I have a hate-thing for excess, so having a watch that bigger than it need to be without losing it's functionality is kinda provoking 😅

·

36mm is a cracking size. I have a vintage 34mm but tend to 36-40

·

Nothing wrong with the smaller size. Depend  of the watch style.

·

It all depends on the size of you wrist. Personally I won’t go below 39mm. No, not a fan of smaller watches.

·

I think there’s room for all sizes. Personal preference is what matters to me. To each their own.

Are you alone? Hmm let me think...

Enjoy your beautiful Oysterdate 😉

Among this community, not at all. Fashion marketing has had many brands calling anything under 38 a ladies' watch for years, but we know better.

·

No , I believe that this is or has been going on for a couple of years now.

I can still go with on oversized watch now and then like a 43mm but generally I prefer a smaller size my favourite being a 38.5 mm Sinn.

·

Big movement to smaller cases sizes. Explorer I back to 36mm.  Tudor Pelagos 39mm just out = kind of small for a chunky diver. Beautiful Oyster Date Enjoy!

·

36-40 are the best

·

I haven’t gone down to 34mm yet like that beautiful oysterdate, but I find my 36mm explorer and 35mm santos to be the perfect size

·

One thing about a small watch on a big arm is that it triggers Karen to comment on it and I love to stir them up. Also they are so light i forget i'm wearing them.

That Oysterdate looks so elegant in contrast to the modern Rolex designs with thick cases and boxy lugs. I hope watchmakers can reproduce their small, slender designs but with modern manufacturing techniques.

I have the explorer and saving up for the santos medium. I think they match very well. Still hesitant if the santos medium doesn’t wear a little big?

I think the santos medium wears pretty much the same as the 36mm explorer. They call the santos a 35mm, but when I measured it that includes the crown guards. It is actually a 33mm square without the crown guards, and with a 42mm lug to lug I think It wears quite well. Luckily it is usually in stock if you have a Cartier dealer anywhere near you, so if you are worried about it definitely try it on first

They are becoming all the rage, which I find a little frustrating. My wrist measures 7.75 inches (about 19.7cm). 40-42mm cases look great on me. 38mm and below just look a little off. I guess at the end of the day, it’s all personal taste, but I’m just having a hard time getting used to the idea of smaller watches.

·

I have larger wrists (8inch) and I am completely comfortable wearing smaller sized watches - I doubt I’m alone. The marketing men will soon get everyone used to seeing guys wearing smaller watches, and then the love of the 40mm+ watches will start to fade I think.

Enjoy your Rolex, and get ahead of the curve :)

I personally always loved smaller watches and for years I've been advocating for recognizing their (imo) superior proportionality on most wrist sizes. Thus, I'm really happy to see the market drifting towards smaller sizes little by little.

On wrist today: Oris Big Crown Pointer Date in 36mm. 🍻

Don't worry, I highly doubt that larger diameters are going anywhere. Maybe the 43mm+ sizes will take a hit, but for the most part, it's just going to be a diversification of brands' portfolios.

In the beginning, I thought bigger watches were better. That is definitely not the case for me anymore. My older watches that are 42mm+ don't get any action these days. Not comfortable. Smallest watch I have is like a 34mm I believe - vintage Omega Seamaster Deville. It's small but I really like it. I am finding that 39mm is probably best for me.

I have watches from 34mm to 43mm. I would make comparison in my new post.

Define small haha. Never a fan of big watches. All my watches are between 39-42mm.

Small as in the range between 32mm and 36mm

You are definitely not alone! I really think it also depends on your style and outfit as well, though. Smaller watches fit more more formal dress better, IMO.
