I get this a lot as a collector and my answer is the same, Casio, Timex, Citizen, and Seiko. My list goes in order of price, but all are a lot for the money. All have great products and features as well as History. What’s your take? I would say Casio Duro is an excellent first watch.
I’m am a collector and I also review watches. I’m designing my YouTube channel and I look forward to assisting others in their journey. I started at a very young age when my grandfather gave me my fir...

I voted for Timex, but to clarify, that would be for a tighter budget. If someone has a bit more to invest, then I’d say go for Citizen!
I would feel comfortable recommending any of these brands at just about any price point. Just about whatever the person might choose to suit their tastes and budget is going to be okay.
Hey Charles, I voted for Seiko. It was my first watch some 11 years back and they have fantastic variety. However, if I may offer another brand, Orient is a good introduction to automatic watches at great value. Either the Kamasu/Bambino for a dive/dress watch respectively work well!
Everyone’s first watch has to be a Seiko 5 or some sorts 🤣✌🏻
I recommend a citizen NY004
Seiko5 is a perennial favourite for first time buyers.
I didn't realize the 7s26 movement was non winding but the SNK805 has been a great watch.😎👍

Yes, when I get my channel I want to review that company. Great looking watches.
My recommendation depends on a few things, starting with budget. If someone only has $50 to spend, Casio definitely makes the best sense, and Casio has great beater watch options. If the budget is $100 or more, my recommendation would depend on their interest(s) in collecting. What styles of watches do they like? Dress? Diver? Military, like field or pilot? Chronograph? The Citizen Corso is a great first dress watch, and the Citizen Promaster Diver is a great first true ISO Diver's watch. The Timex Expedition North line has some great military/field options, and Timex also has some good, affordable chronographs. Are they interested in microbrands? There are some great microbrands I recommend as starting brands, like Islander. Also, for someone interested in mechanical movements, Seiko would be my first big brand recommendation.
I voted Casio, but my 2nd choice would be Timex for value, but with a bit more cash it would be a hard call between Seiko or Citizen.
All of the above.
I would say Seiko. But it all depends on the person. I have friends that might like a mechanical watch but I know they won't even bother to wind the watch if it's dead and throw it inside a drawer let alone change the date. For those I recommend Quartz Solar even better if it's an atomic watch. They don't have to worry about batteries, time change even if they travel. For the 80% of my "normie" friends they care more about their Apple watch and probably see my collection like hot garbage if it's not a Rolex.
Seiko 5
If the first watch is to be a quartz piece, then it's hard to beat Casio and Timex ... Timex in particular is killing it lately with some of their retro re-issues! Citizen also good with their eco-drive solars if one wants to spend a bit more dosh ...
Seiko of course for a first mechanical and/or automatic piece is a good choice ... but will vouch for Orient as some of their models are on par with Seiko price-wise, or in some cases even better! IMHO Orient is also just as good (if not better in many instances) as Seiko as far as quality goes and Orient has some unique looking watches too! Their Mako/Kamasu line of Divers is top notch!
All are fine choices. Seiko made me fall in love deeper and harder. U can romance the in-house automatic movements more and aspire to finer pieces after that first time piece.
Rolex.
It depends on the age and where the person is in life I think. But, that said, Casios for everyone!
Casio for quartz
Citizen for solar quartz
And Seiko for Auto
Obviously depends on budget and design wanted. Casio has a massive amount of "street cred" Seiko has some great designs and Timex has some classic looking watches. But I would always recommend a Rodger Smith series 2 or a Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon.
For a first watch it's got to be Casio
Low budget, Casio
Mid, citizen
Bigger, Seiko
Seiko all the way
They're all a good choice, just depends on what you like
Orient!
