A Wild Night

I have about an hour commute each way for work. In the summer, I usually use my motorcycle. Being on the coast of Lake Michigan, weather changes rapidly. Occasionally I get rained on a bit. Last night was much worse.

As I started home, the sky was ominous and green. It was calm and I was scooting down the highway as quickly as I could safely. When the storm hit, it hit with a fury unlike anything I’ve ridden in. I couldn’t make it to an overpass, an exit ramp, nothing. I was just there. Winds so strong I could barely keep my bike sitting still. Pounding rain. Then I watched as an entire tree blew across the highway. Probably 3 or 4 feet ahead of me. I was pretty confident this was the end. It ended as quickly as it began. I’m still in shock.

To keep this watch related… I was wearing my Glycine Combat 6. It’s rated for 50m. With the pounding rains and 80mph winds I’m surprised water didn’t make it around the crown. It seems to be dry. No condensation on the crystal or display case back.

Edit to Update: the weather service has determined it was an EF 1. Wind speed of 110mph. The damage is unreal. https://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/2023/08/all-of-our-trees-just-hit-the-ground-couple-says-of-riding-out-suspected-tornado.html

Glycine Combat, tough enough to fight a tornado.

Bike rider as well. Scary enough in a car, let alone on a bike. Glad you found a bridge for shelter and got home safely. Shiny side up,,, always. 🙏

I had no shelter. Couldn’t make it off the highway.

Good to know that you're alright, mate

As much as we make fun of our northern neighbours, I'm glad you are alright.

Very rare Foggy Petronas (if you're old enough to remember....)

Another motorcyclist here. Glad you're OK man!

Spent a bit of time in northern Michigan a couple of decades ago ... lovely part of Planet Earth!

Weather here in my part of eastern Kanuckistan is often miserable for lengthy periods of time, but thankfully we don't get tornados 😮 Can't imagine riding thru one on 2-wheels!!

I’ve been in a few in an 18 wheeler. This was my first and hopefully only experience on 2 wheels. Looking at the news touch down was about 8 miles east of where I was . https://www.mlive.com/galleries/PTPETJ7NZ5EKPM5R6MNP5BVE5I/

The 5600 block of Alpine, shown in a lot of these pictures is about 4 miles away.

Glad you're well. Now go get a whiskey.

·

hey man just be careful, God bless

Glad you’re safe! I’d love to see more stories on here of different circumstances people have worn their watches in.

It sounds crazy but I wish I’d gotten a wrist shot in the worst of it.

God is merciful as always! 🙏 Glad you now have an interesting story to tell, rather than others having to tell it about YOU! 👍

Be safe out there

Wish it was mine!! Only a handful were ever made,(homologation special, for early 2000's WSBK) this is at a local bike shop.

Stay safe and have fun mate 🏍👍

I'm glad you are safe. That same line of storms came through my area here in Ohio. It made for an interesting night. I put on my Invicta 2301Professional Diver. The homage to the Deep Sea Dweller. In case I had to go for a swim. Again I'm glad that you are okay because that storm was brutal.

Thanks. Nothing really bad happened other than the power went out for about 10 minutes and tree branches all over the place. I watched one fall out of my tree, hit the ground, then fell over on my neighbor's Trail Blazer. He got a couple of small dents and scratches. That was it. He was lucky. If it would have landed directly it would have crushed it.
