What Watch Sould I Wear?

Hello crunchers! Today I need your help! I want to ask you a question. In a month or two I will be travelling to the States for the first time! NY, more precisely, with a possible visit to Massachusetts and Virginia. So, naturally, a watch is a must have. But what to wear? Are there some watches that may be too eyecatching? Perhaps to avoid wearing a certain make and model? Engage with me

You will find no concerns with you watch being pinched in Mass or NYC. In both all the time. Wear what you want.

·

It depends on what you’re doing. I’d go with a G-Shock and a GADA watch. But keeping it real, everyone here wears Apple Watches. 🤣

·

Will still be jacket weather when you get here. You’ll be fine regardless.

·

I’d wear that Breitling 👍only a watch nerd would know it’s a Breitling

·

NYC - should be safe but always remember: "your (long) sleeve is your friend." With the Breitling - no problem anywhere.

·

I'm also going to NYC for the first time later in the year. I'm planning on taking my Phoibos Eagle Ray GMT and my Hamilton. May buy a Stella Ellis GMT whilst I'm there😂 have a great trip.

SR71 Blackbird 😍

·

Check out Canal st in NYC for some awesome fakes!

·

Should be fine overall in all those locations- just be mindful of your surroundings like you would be in any major city where, for example, pick pocketing might be an issue.

·

Lived in NYC for 5 years and am going on 20 years working there. Never had an issue before 3am. Use common sense — watch goes under a cuff.

·

- “Hey, what time is it?”

- “8 something. I’m gonna need a few more minutes to tell you the right time though”

·

I recommend a nice field watch, my top three picks that I've worn previously would be Seiko SARB017, Hamilton Khaki King, or Citizen PMD56

What do you have in the line up to choose from or pick up a piece there!

When I travel to NYC I’ve worn everything from G Shock to JLC… I’ve never worn either of my Rolex watches, not that I don’t feel safe, but oddly, they never feel very NYC ish to me. Understated elegance for me.

Oh and truth be told I remember my Apple Watch on. The other wrist a few times, it is surprisingly nice for walking directions. It helps you look like a local rather than having your phone out and spinning around like you are in a map. Apple Pay/Wallet was nice to have handy as well on the wrist instead of getting out my travel cash all of the time.

Last year I was in mid town shopping and getting coffee a lot of the young analyst and tech/finance/crypto crowds were sporting Apple Watches.

"Traveling to the states" means you're coming from out of the country, so you want to be aware of the time in your country. Do you have a gmt?

·

Depends where you are from, a GMT would make sense!

Times Square has Swatch, Invicta and Tissot stores, and an overwhelming police presence. You could wear your most outrageous watch there and nobody will notice because they will have their attention drawn by the naked cowboy, a bunch of topless ladies, a giant Bumblebee transformer, Ironman, Mickey and Minnie Mouse walking around. It's a total tourist trap being so noisy and rediculous, but it's a silly and fun place to be and worth checking out at least once. In terms of safety, I would say it is probably the most heavily guarded as the city made it a point to protect their tourism golden goose. Times Square is fully lit and still very crowded at 2am (and still very patrolled by police). Watch-spotting here you will see all most people wearing Apple Watch, but number of folks will be flashing their gold watches for sure.

5th Ave has a ton of flagship stores - Lange, Omega, Breguet, Blancpain, Tag Hauer, Cartier, etc (also another Swatch store) and with its (relative) proximity to Rockefeller Center is also pretty safe. Watch-spotting here is actually pretty boring - shoppers here have already planned ahead of time what they are going to get, so they make an appointment, do their shopping and leave

Soho has the G-Shock, Grand Seiko and F.P. Journe boutiques, in addition to a bunch of other jewelry stores selling AP watches and the like. It was also the place where the Watches of Switzerland store got vandalized during the 2020 George Floyd protests. I find Soho and Hudson Yards the best places to go watch-spotting.

Downtown you will find Brietling, Longines, another Tissot and a third Swatch boutique by the World Trade Center. This area is one of the newer redeveloped areas, so the architecture is pretty neat.

All in all - wear whatever you want - nothing is too weird. Double-wrist it if you want. And just practice general safety rules - don't stay out too late, hang out in well-lit, crowded areas, have a buddy. If you're not feeling comfortable just roll down your sleeves

Don’t wear anything expensive in NYC. Or have it covered the entire time
