Things watch collectors do and say that make you cringe.

I thought let’s do something funny but a little controversial. We all have our moments when we say to ourselves why did that person say or do that? Before we begin this isn’t meant to be offensive more venting so please if your one of these people don’t take offense.

I’ll start. I cringe anytime a collector brags about already owing expensive watches, while saying I just walked into my AD and came out with a new $10k watch. Not everyone is like this way, but I’ve seen a few.

Do you have any?

Maybe the crotch photobombed the picture 🤣

That old excuse!

If I ever walked out of an AD with a new 10K watch there'd be security running after me.

·

What is the market value of your current watches? Does it hold value like a R?🙄

·

"Every collector/enthusiast should have a <watch/brand>."

I understand that not everyone should, but some newbies takes this literally.

I think every collector/enthusiast should experience said <watch/brand>, by at minimum trying one on. But no one should be shamed into owning a watch or brand they don't like just because some talking head said they should.

I've got a couple, the term 'beater watch' is thrown around quite loosely, to some that translates to a watch that goes through thick and thin covered in muck with scars, chips and dents, and to others it's an F91 that the closest it got to a beating was when they wore it to put the bins out.

I think people over romanticise things, for example the term ' Watch Journey' - we're buying interesting things to put on our wrists for fun.

It's not a philosophical deep personal discovery, it's more, I liked that thing and now I like this thing, hardly 'I didn't know who I was until I bought this Khaki Field Mechanical' 😂

Speak for yourself.

I'm learning lots about myself while learning about watches.

Behaviour

"Flexing" and similar vulgarity

Phrases

"Handmade Swiss craftsmanship"

"Advertising doesn't work on me and I'm not influenced by brand"

"This is a true GMT"

"Its price is that high because of its high tech movement and the hand finishing costs so much to produce"

That old excuse!

That’s what I tell my wife 😂

·

Comments like "I popped into the AD at lunchtime and came out with a <Insert luxury brand here>"

I get it - it may not be a lot of money to some, but to an awful lot of people times are tough at the moment and not getting any easier any time soon. It just feels a little tone-deaf to read about how you spaffed the price of a small car just on a whim.

Speaking only of value and return on investment while showing little or no knowledge or interest in the actual watch (or other item).

Were you watching a YT episode with Kevin O'Leary? 😉

·

I try not to let anything get to me from an individual...reason being, we probably all say or do something that irritates someone somewhere sometime. So being judgy about someone will just bring it back on your head 10X.

So who cares if someone calls their watch a "Big Boi" (Federico), or "rabbits on" about "pure class", or has "moans and niggles" about every watch, and on and on...

I'm just interested in seeing what other collectors are drawn to and why. So many interesting stories.

I'm sure I've violated a few of the things listed here at one time or another.

What "boils my urine" (as so eloquently stated earlier in this thread) is when companies lie and inflate their credentials and mislead consumers. I just don't like to see people innocently taken advantage of by scammers...evern if they use a crown as a logo.

'Nuff said

I skip those on purpose.

What does GADA mean?

Yes it's Go Anywhere, Do Anything. A "universal" watch that will be appropriate for any situation, a "Jack of all trades"

This literally cannot ring more true than it already does - well said 👍

The phrase "God Tier."

This phrase almost makes me want to never own another Casio

That phrase, plus this. (I'm gonna be venting about this for a while, it seems.)

This is more on the YouTubers that are watch collectors, but when they do these......sensationalized and overly exaggerated thumbnails. I blurred out the face, but IYKYK

This is just YT in general.

Plenty of titles on plenty of all types of channels out there like "It's time to bid farewell to (item/person!" and then the video shows they just took a vacation or something.

Well, part of this thread is midly terrifying... Trying to figure out how many cringey things I have already said since joining less than a month ago. Maybe I should start a bingo card. Probably a good thing you can't hear the way I pronounce certain English words or see anything more than my bad wrist shots... Are my heavily scratched hardwood floors an issue for anyone yet?

We are just taking the piss out of ourselves... for the most part.

Sorry I disagree it’s only a counterfeit if the other company puts the name of the company on the dial, and passes it as their own design. There’s no law or rule I’m aware of that says designs can’t be borrowed. If that were the case no pun intended there wouldn’t be so many Submariner homages.

Or a Submariner...

or a Speedy...

A few choice quotes that grind my gears:

"Why isn't this 38/39mm?"

"Where's the sapphire crystal? *Insert sketchy Aliexpress brand* puts them on watches costing $50!"

"I love this watch, but I wish it had an automatic movement...quartz has no soul."

"Why would you buy a *insert desirable/expensive watch* when you could get a *insert another sketchy Chinese photocopy brand*? You get the same look and a Seiko NH35 with a ghost date for a fraction of the price!"

"The only digital/quartz watches worth buying are Casios."

"My watch has more horology than yours."

"Tudor is just Rolex for poor people."

"Grand Seiko? Why would I spend $3000 on a watch made by the same company that makes the SNK809?"

"Liking/buying Vostoks and Russian watches means that you're supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine."

"Man, I'm so bummed out that my Submariner's clasp is scratched up from sitting at my desk; I'll never make any money off it now!"

Preach 🙏🙌!!!
