Bart and Tim Grönefeld, also known as the Horological Brothers, underwent extensive training in Switzerland, which is renowned for its rich heritage in watchmaking. Their educational journey included time at prestigious institutions such as Audemars Piguet Renaud and Papi and the Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program (WOSTEP) in Neuchâtel. This background provided them with expertise in high complications, such as minute repeaters and tourbillons, setting a solid foundation for their future endeavors.

Typically, their production is about 50 watches per year, with ambitions to increase to 100, but they are cautious about expanding too rapidly as it could compromise the craftsmanship they are known for.

A key component of their collection is the Grönefeld Caliber G-06, showcased in the 1941 Principia Automatic. This movement is celebrated for its meticulous hand-finishing and the unique double-arm gear train, a signature element in Grönefeld’s designs. The stainless steel bridges in this movement are crafted to mimic the architectural style of Dutch 'bell gables,' beautifully integrating cultural heritage with horological craftsmanship.

The Grönefeld 1941 Principia Automatic is a true connoisseur’s timepiece, representing the pinnacle of the Grönefeld Brothers' horological craftsmanship. And it’s only thier entry level model! They take no finishing shortcuts-even on their “cheapest” entry level time only watch-with over 200 hours of manual finishing.

I’m currently evaluating my options to purchase a Gronefeld. While I love this particular watch, I prefer the light blue or salmon dial more than this rhodium dial. We’ll see what comes of it!

Love the movement design

It’s probably my favorite movement design/finishing. 🔥

The watch seems very nice. I’m interested to find out why it just says The Netherlands on it but not the “made in”.

Because some of the movement components come from a Swiss company run by a man named Andreas Strehler. I made a post about it yesterday. I didn’t include the part about where the base caliber components come from. Precision and Heritage: The Grönefeld Brothers' Journey from Swiss Training to Dutch Craftsmanship

The movement is a work of 🎨. I love the pronounced lug design. A masterpiece Paul.

I often think that people like the Gronefeld brothers are like a combination of visual artists and musicians. Like Smith on isle they are completely consumed in their work. Their work produces breathtaking results. Thanks so much for sharing with us. I for one appreciate spending time looking.

·

Their cheapest watch is 37000€…

·

Finishing shortcuts on a stainless steel dress watch with no added complications for 37000€ would be a little pretentious on their part

·

Some truly beautiful and artisanal watchmaking from Grönefeld. Excited to see you checking out such a brand!

·

Paul it’s simply Goldgious!!

BREATHTAKING my man! Whichever you go for please share with us 😍

I understand where you're coming from with the price concern. However, when it comes to the craftsmanship of watches from top-tier brands like those in the “Holy Trinity”, the level of finishing they offer at this price is quite rare. They provide top-notch finishing usually reserved for the highest-end models from Swiss brands, which often cost significantly more.

Essentially, Grönefeld offers a level of luxury and detailing that usually commands a near six-figure price tag in the Swiss market, but at a more accessible price point. I view it as representing some value, especially when comparing it to what you typically get from the top-tier Swiss brands at similar prices.

I completely agree with your perspective on the Grönefeld brothers. Their dedication to their craft is truly akin to that of both visual artists and musicians, deeply immersed in their art. The passion and precision they bring to watchmaking are what enable them to create such exquisite timepieces. It’s a joy to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of their work. I’m glad you appreciate their dedication as much as I do.

Thank you for clarifying I was not aware that there would be some relative compromise in the finishing on watches in the same price bracket from Patek, VC or AP…. That’s a little disappointing to learn
