"The Dead Lume Scrolls" Let's see your dead lume watches....

Last week we were talking about lume watches, a topic which I throughly enjoyed. This week it may be an interesting contrast to discuss our favorite dead lume watches.

Nothing lasts forever, this includes even the best luminous material. After about 20-25 years the lume is pretty much dead, often leaving a very wonderful patina behind. Restoration is of course possible, but not always desirable because the gorgeous patina would be destroyed. One could also argue you are getting rid of some of the value of the watch with a relume.

And so it is, I have many dead lume watches in my collection and I love them all. Sooner or later you will have a dead lume watch in your collection, simply by the passage of time or a vintage purchase.

Let's see your dead lume watches and why you still love them. I've posted just a few of mine, at this late stage there are many.

It's a simple fact and beautiful in a way. Of course less useful but thats what the newer lumestrong pieces are for anyway.

In the most recent episode of Strange New Worlds, La'an and Kirk use a watch with expired lume as a bomb detector! 😎 No lie. 🤣 A watch nerd must have written that plot! 😃

Please tell me more about that Heuer! Cathedral hands, made in France?

Heuer 844 Monnin early period (1979) the first dive watch offered by Heuer and manufactured in France by G Monnin. Later this watch became to Heuer 1000 and then the Aquaracer.

I have a few, but the greatest (and saddest) would be the ATP. This would have served a soldier well.

Looks great on the perlon, that's old radium right?

I believe so… 10:50 has the clean burn pattern. Subtle, but infinitely cool. Love this watch.

Close second is the Fluva Geneve - at the right angle it shows how it would have glowed white hot.

Helvetia Fliegeruhr. This one came from a US WWII veteran from Maine, these were not known to be issued to US forces. They were known to be issued to German and other European forces leading up to and during the WWII time period.

Haha, yes I can. From my SOTC over a year ago I give you:

I love it, thank you for the history of your timeless wrist watch (pun intended) 😊. I wasn't as deep into watches as I am now when I was stationed in Germany but boy do I wish I was.

I think it was a Tag. They took the crystal off thinking it increased the sensitivity, so they still Hollyweirded it.

My 1000 left side could only hold a charge of about 3mins before it would disappear .

Is that an OG 62MAS??!!

Looks like a museum piece

my year 23 year old Seiko monster glows fiercely , maybe 90% of what a new turtle glows like?

It is an original 62MAS manufacture date 1967.

I think by the Monster era new lume formulas were in play, perhaps they last longer than stuff from the 70's, 80's, & 90's. That could be an interesting subject to explore. I had several monsters in multiple colorways back in the day but got rid of them during the various distillations of my collection. I probably should have kept at least one of them.

That’s awesome 👏. I’d love one but since I’d never wear it doesn’t make sense to track one down.

Here’s the 23 year old monster beside a bunch of modern watches - the only one that crushes it is the Prospex LX , which crushes every modern watch I’ve ever compared it to.
