'The Time Teller' on YouTube used to bash Squale a fair amount. When he finally got one sent to him, he made a video titled "I was wrong about Squale". It's the same situation with many people online complaining about watches they have never worn. Squale made a few homage watches in the past and many of them were a little too on-the-nose. However, their current lineup is mostly their own design. Their 50 fathoms-type Subs look better than the current offerings at Blancpain in my opinion. The fact that dive welders actively wear Squale speaks volumes about their quality. They are made to serve a specific function and they do it very well. Personally, I own the Sub-39 and the Montauk. The Montauk is a great sport watch and the Sub-39 works in just about any situation. The build quality of my Squale watches far exceed my Hamilton field watch. They are one of the best value propositions available.
Thanks for posting this.. 12-hour bezel's are one of my favorite features. This is the first I had ever seen that particular Oris. After searching for a review, I find one from Jody / 'Just One More Watch' and I have no clue how it slipped by me. I love everything about it except for the price. It would need to be half of that before I would seriously consider buying it.
I travel for a living and carry two of these cases in different colors. I actually prefer these to a watch roll as they are extremely durable, functional and take up minimal space. I bring three watches and keep one on-wrist. I bring a GMT on bracelet, a 100+ meter water-ready sport watch on NATO and a chronograph on leather to keep the bases covered.
My CFI is current but inactive. 1996 was the last time I had to teach pivotal altitude. I can still do basic multiplication and division on an E6B.. Put ground speed on outer ring over the top inner pointer (60) and distances on the outer ring will read over times on the inner ring. Anything past that, I'm breaking out the iPad.
The main reason I bought the Ranger is its ability to fly under the radar as an everyday watch. What everyone else complains about is the reason that I bought it. It's a phenomenal watch and I'm always happy to wear it. The main reason I bought the Railmaster is the dial. The pictures don't do it justice in the way that it plays with the light. This is especially the case with the denim. It looks like an ugly watch online. I say all this so you get an idea why I have both to start with. The Railmaster would make a better one-watch collection than the Ranger. If you are looking for something very easy to read, less formal, extremely comfortable and you want to be told by the entire watch-snob world that you overpaid for a bland watch, get the Ranger... Railmaster bracelet $823 all-in @ Omega AD Las Vegas / Wynn Plaza. You can probably do better. I ordered it Feb 10 and it just shipped out yesterday as they had to special order it from Europe. When I ordered the Railmaster on that temporary rebate, the denim was only available on a strap. Good Luck !
I own both the Ranger and the denim version of the Railmaster. It would be hard to pick between them. I would probably go with the Omega. However, the bracelet is much better on the Tudor and I prefer its smaller / more comfortable size. The Railmaster would probably be higher up the list as a do-anything watch as the dial looks more formal than the Ranger. You can't go wrong with either one. Be sure to consider the AquaTerra. Also...JomaShop has a great deal on the Railmaster. I got one at Christmas for $2850 on the strap, had to order an overpriced bracelet and still came out way ahead.
