Zaratsu polish is a double edged sword

I love this watch. It is the most polished watch in my collection. It also has a simple and clean dial with the awesome sharp dauphine hands, my favorite handset style. But herein lies the downside. Not many reviewers would tell you that zaratsu polished surfaces are scratch magnets. I had to find this out for myself once i first owned the watch. I feel like even contact with air at just the right temperature and humidity will leave a hairline scratch on the polished surface of the watch. 😂

I am not really complaining though. Just warning future buyers and those that have interests in buying a Grand Seiko-especially the 44GS models. If you have OCD like me and get bothered by seeing small hairline scratches on a high polished surface, just prepare yourself. ☺️

I highly recommend a GS quartz. It has very accurate timekeeping so you can tell exactly how late you are to wherever you're going. 😁

If you have an issue with scratches and dings, I would highly recommend to not buy a GS. I swear if you look at it too long a scratch will form.

·

This is titanium grade 6x, i am not afraid of scratch. My kermit titanium get more scratch in 3 months than 9 months GS. I wear both watches, left right hand. :)

Do you also find that the steel on the mondern day GS gets dings much easier than other watches? I’ve seen so many used GS watches and bracelets with deep scratches and dings you don’t normally see in other watches.

Exactly haha. I did not really hear that from any of the reviewers on youtube. Had to find out the "hard way". I have since accepted it though. Haha

Awesome watch. 🤩

To be fair none of the scratches on mine are deep or highly noticeable, but if you look closely or hit it with sunlight, they all show themselves 😄

I haven't really hit my watch on anything that could cause any dings (thats why i dont know where these scratches come from) so i cant answer that question. I do know GS doesnt treat their steel with hard coating (diashield) like seiko prospex does. Diashield indeed works because my seiko LX with diashield has far fewer noticeable scratches than my 44GS watch.

This is true of any watch that is highly polished, and obviously more so with softer metals.

Titanium is generally less scratch-prone than steel, isn't it?

This is 100% accurate. Do not look too long at your GS as direct gaze is enough to scratch the polished surface

I thought titanium is more scratch prone? It's stronger but softer (i.e. it's harder to bend but easier to scratch), right?

(obviously different alloys and processes change all these)

Oh, you're right! My mistake.

I think it depend on the grade. I also have rze resolute integrated bracelet titanium. Gs is more resistant

·

I store my GS next to my sinn U50 I’m hoping the tegement treatment slowly infuses my Gs with some spare scratch resistance 😂

Good luck with that 🤣

It’s more scratch prone just has “self healing” properties

The new "ever brilliant steel" GS introduced may be more durable. I have a Seiko diver made of it and, after 3 years of serious abuse, there's not a scratch on the case.

Plenty of GS with brushed surfaces, it's mainly the 'heritage' collection that has lots of polish

·

A lot of people confuse zaratsu polishing as being the final part of the polishing process

Zaratsu polishing is what gives the case finish a non distorted finish to reflect light evenly,

look at other watches on the polished parts and you will most likely see 'ripples' or a distorted light reflection, the final polish is just polishing like any other watch, it just gives the perfect finish on a curved case. The fact a master craftsman who has mastered his art does this one every Grand seiko is something that enjoy when I purchase a watch and not just produced on a cnc machine

if the scratches bother you it's a 2 minute job to polish it wish a polishing cloth

Taken from a GS interview

"This way of polishing is much more difficult process but it makes the surface of the metal extraordinarily smooth. Following this process, a final buff is applied to burnish the surface to a mirror finish. This can be achieved even if the Zaratsu process is skipped, but distortion of the surface would be unavoidable."

·

Nice discussion. A potentially stupid question regarding polishing: a polishing cloth isnt going to harm the sapphire bezel or crystal? So no need to tape off those areas?

Ah no wonder everbrilliant steel watches are a lot more expensive

Thank you for this tidbit of knowledge🤩

I dare not run a polishing cloth through my case though, i just might make it worse (i have the baddest of luck 🤣)

Beautiful at the AD, scratch magnet after that

Ah, I see you wield the Sword of Heroes. "A sword so sharp you can cut yourself just by looking."

Sorry, my son has watched Kung Fu Panda like 50 times.

Oh that's good to know, I wonder if GS has an article on this subject as I'm sure it has come up alot from their fans and customers.

Now I have n urge to go see/examine my friend’s GS 😂 plant a seed then wait for huge discount on top of friends and family 😂😂😂 jk jk he loves his quartz GMT, woudn’t do that to him

·

I don't have a GS at this time but I am actively trying to choose one now. Although I like the models with the polished top of the lugs (Aka 44GS style), I will more than likely select one with brush lugs at the top and polished sides. Unfortunately, I fall in the camp that does not like to see scratches :( but like many other like their dials and love those polished indices.

You will learn to accept scratches 😁

Whatever you end up picking, enjoy ☺️

Mine too, but for some reason I CANNOT stay awake through ANY this movie. He’s been watching it for 15 years, and I have yet to get beyond the first four minutes.
