Any JDM watches/shops to recommend?

Hello crunches! Any JDM watches/shops to recommend? I’m heading to Tokyo next month for a short holiday and am looking to buy a casual and affordable watch. Open to Seikos, Orients, Citizens or other Japanese brands. Would also love to know any must-go shops in Tokyo! Thanks in advance!

Check out @WatchSpiritsTokyo . They have a post about the places all over Tokyo to get and see the different models.

Check out Mizutani Camera in Ueno. My first post on WatchCrunch was about my visit to the store.

Also, check out Bic Camera. It is a big department store in Japan and they are all over, and they sell watches. So you can get any and all JDM brands there.

Finally, check out the Hard Off. It is a weird sounding name 😕, but it is a thrift store chain there. They are all over the place and you can find hidden gems there all the time.

I picked up the Seamaster at a Hard Off, and the Tuna at Mizutani camera. Japan is heaven if you are into watches.

Any of the big camera stores! BIC or Yodobashi. I got my citizen nb1060 from yodobashi.

Definate agree on hard off and hobby off, also try second street for used bargains (although sometimes not as cheap as you might expect, always check against Amazon Japan) also make sure you check the airport gift shops before security. I got a Seiko black Ripley (discontinued) from Fukuoka airport at 1/2 RRP. I also got a citizen quartz GMT at half price from an outlet mall near Narita.

·

I have the SBSA057 (JDM just because of the japanese day-wheel) and I bought that through https://www.shoppinginjapan.net for a fantastic price.

Also nice: https://www.sakurawatches.com

Both of these are providing good service and they ship really fast via DHL Express. I ordered my watch friday afternoon and received it monday noon (from Japan to Germany, mind you. Over the weekend).

Thanks! I actually had to source the bracelet from their nb1050 line (found a loose bracelet on buyee) since this only came on leather

It's from their NB1050 line -- dif watch, same case. I found the bracelet on buyee. Someone was selling the bracelet second hand. Citizen don't sell the bracelet only.

I hear the snxs uncle seiko bracelets fit this w a bit of tweaking

Welcome to Tokyo!

Nakano Broadway - the watch place in Tokyo

The place for watch browsing is Nakano Broadway. It's a very old school mall with probably 10-20 watch sellers (used/gray). Get out the Nakano subway station in the North direction, and you will see the entrance just on the other side of the square.

As you walk along the corridor, you will see some smaller vendors. Some of them have some affordable watches (Kitamura Camera, TWC).

As you keep walking straight, you will get after a while to the real Nakano Broadway (there's a sign). As you enter, take the escalator or the stairs to the right to get to the second floor where the biggest retailers are located. They are clearly not focusing on affordable watches, but they have an incredible selection. The biggest and busiest are JackRoad, Watchnian and Kamekichi; but there are many more. And if you find the one that sells only Speedmasters, please tell me where it is! I have been there a dozen of times, and never found it, it's a maze.

Other places

Every shopping district in Tokyo has tons of watch shops, independents or ADs.

Some of my favourites (all super-high level stuff)

  • Ginza

    • Rasin (there are 2 or 3, one of which dedicated only to Rolexes)

  • Shinjuku

    • the 4th floor of the Isetan mall is full of big brands ADs

    • watchnian (although much smaller than the branch in Nakano)

    • GMT (south-west of the station)

  • Shibuya

    • House of Kiroba

    • HMS (small shops, specialize in microbrands)

Affordable

  • Don Quijote - that's the quintessential chaotic shopping center in Japan. They are everywhere, and watches tend to be for some reason at the upper floors or at the floor immediately below it. Almost everywhere, they will have Seiko, Citizen and Casio. In very few places (Roppongi branch for example) they have Omega, Tag Heur and Longines.

  • BicCamera and Yamada as other have said. As usual Seiko, Citizen and Casio. Pure chaos, sometimes difficult to find where the watches are.

  • Books off/Hard off. People suggest them, but honestly they are more a miss than a hit. Sometimes they don't have watches at all, most of the times just cheap watches. the only one where I saw nice watches was the BooksOff Super Bazaar 409 in Kawasaki Minatocho - I leave this information mostly for other people who live in Tokyo, but I don not suggest you to go there since it's in the middle of nowhere at 60-90min trip from any place you might be during your stay in Tokyo

No doubt pics will be shared and likewise I’m curious to see what you end up with! I’d like to get something unique and JDM to honor the trip but I have no idea whether that means something new or vintage, everyday or luxury. Stay tuned!

Rather random, but this was my last JDM pick-up, the SBPK003. I bought it pre-owned rather than retail in Japan. Wrote a little review on it and it’s my current GADA watch.

There is also a JDM version of this with a Pepsi dial, the SBPK005. Worth a look when you’re in Japan! Cheers 🍻

Oh, that's great! I've only seen the green and blue dials here in the US! Thanks for the tip and I'll definitely be on the lookout for that one!

Take your pick, there are so many Seiko's, Citizens and Casios to choose from. My pick was the oceanus

Thät one looks super slick – which bracelet did you put it on?

I look ät both colorways of the NB1060 änd appreciate both, büt I haven't bought one yet. The blue dial speaks to me, büt I worry thät the white calendar-wheel ät 3 o'clock will annoy me äs it disturbs the dial – the white/cream dial doesn't have thät problem. Do you notice thät date-wheel while wearing it?

·

Hello @Robin_npy – good luck with your Japanese watch shopping.

Are these photos in the header watches thät you own? If you can, can you give me the reference number for thät white-dial Seiko 5 on the rubber strap? I thought I was beyond the Seiko 5 collection – but thät top one may pull me in.

Bons voyages!

Hey @Arctic_Circlist_117 these were pictures I took off the web of JDM watches in my watchlist.

If you’re referring to the top picture, that is the SRPK17 (or SBSA223 JDM). It’s actually a full steel watch and the strap is a retro-style metal bracelet. It’s the Seiko 5 Sports 55th Anniversary Re-creation Limited Edition 2023.

To be frank, it’s not that limited as there are 15555 models produced, with 14555 of them being fhe international model. You can easily purchase this from any country. The rare ones would be 1000 JDM version (where the only difference is the kanji words for the day wheel).

Hope this info helps! Cheers, and I’ll be sure to share my haul in Japan next month!
