Seiko Prospex 200M Sumo Solar Black GMT SBPK003 JDM Review

Got myself this Sumo Solar Black GMT for my birthday today! This is a sleeper Seiko pick and I’m surprised to have not seen any posts about this on WatchCrunch. Disclaimer, this is not a sponsored post. I bought this watch myself and am just writing an independent review for my love of this watch.

Here’s a quick spec lists:

- 200m Water Resitance

- Stainless Steel Case and Strap

- 4 Micro-adjustments

- Double-lock Clasp

- 5K65 Solar Quartz Movement

- Sapphire Glass with Inner AR Coating

- Luminous Hands and Markers

- Average Monthly Difference ±15 Seconds

- True GMT

- Unidirectional Rotating Bezel

- Screw Lock Crown

- Screw Back

- Magnetic Resistance

- Case Size: 45mm

- Lug-to-Lug Distance: 51.8mm

- Thickness: 13.2mm

- Lug Width: 20mm

- Weight: 182g

Don’t be fooled by its daunting dimensions. The manageable 51.8mm lug-to-lug distance makes the 45mm case wear significantly smaller! For reference, I have a 6.5 inch wrist and it hugs my wrist perfectly with almost no overhang. However, some with smaller wrists (or prefer a smaller presence in their divers) may still be sized out of this Sumo.

In usual Seiko fashion, the metal bracelet is nothing to shout about. The 4 micro-adjustments make for a decent fit on most wrists. For those who are looking for a better metal bracelet, unfortunately at the moment, Uncle Seiko does not produce for this specific model (I emailed to Larry to confirm this). However, I think a rubber strap will fit swimmingly with this sumo diver, given its easily-accessible 20mm lug width.

My favourite aspect of the Sumo Solar Black GMT has to be the subtle black horizontal wave texture in the dial used to disguise the solar panels. The black dial is contrasted well by its red GMT hand (matched with the same red “GMT” wording). If this was not a JDM model, I’m sure it would have taken off in the international market!

Overall, its specifications makes it an exceptional GADA watch. Its solar quartz movement works well for its true/traveller’s GMT function. This watch also comes in three other colourways, specifically: (1) Green (SFK003); (2) Blue (SFK001); and (3) Pepsi (SBPK005 JDM). While this watch typically retails for around 775 USD, I have found AD listings both in Japan and abroad for around 500 USD, and pre-loved versions going for even lower. For reference, I bought mine in lightly-used condition for 375 USD, which was an absolute steal!

Hope this birthday post may help many others find another dive/GMT watch to add to their collection! Cheers fellow crunchers!

@phat_tony I totally agree! Just putting this out there as some collectors solely collect automatic watches.
