Speedy Substitutes?

Many others have crowdsourced their decisions here. Why not this one? Despite my fascination with (and memories of) NASA's Apollo program, I'll never spend what a true Omega Speedmaster moonwatch costs. So, what about alternatives? Go for an obvious homage/knock-off like the Pagani? (I have several mega-quartz based designs already, so movement is familiar.) Or, save that money toward a better quality watch with a solar quartz movement I don't have an example of? What say you, Crunchers? (Other suggestion happily entertained, but I do want your pick between these two! And, no, I'm not really interested in the MoonSwatch, thanks.)

Good suggestion! But I've tried one on and 45mm is just too wide for my 6.5" (16.5cm) wrists. (I shoulda mentioned that...) 😉

Good choice

A Pouge is another option if you can find one. Islander has a really nice homage that came out a week or so ago.

Lovely GMTs but looking for chronographs along the lines of the Omega Speedmaster

Sorry, I saw NASA themed and ran with it 😁

For what it’s worth, I’ve been eyeing the Pogue-styled watches on Island Watch. I appreciate seeing others talk about it!

Neither. The useless 24Hr indicator present on both dials is a deal breaker for me, and the date window position on the SCC is annoying to say the least.

Bulova's newer 43mm Lunar Pilot is a better option IMO, but there is always the Alpha Chronograph if you want a mechanical homage that looks very close to the Speedmaster.

No worries. I like what I’ve seen of Islander offerings. Haven’t bought anything from there, yet… 😉

The Alpha seems a nice middle ground (though has your deal breaker 24 hour sub-dial markings.) Thanks for sharing that!

Also seen the 43mm (43.5 actually) Lunar Pilot but cannot fathom how they charge 50% more for it. 🤔

How about Maen. It's coming soon. Don't know how much it is but it can't be as much as a speedy.

I have looked at Maen dive style watches. Felt they weren't the best price to value proposition. Spymaster is lovely, but no tachymeter on the bezel, which is a speedy style element for me, at least.

Boy, everyone is so helpful! Thanks for taking a minute to share.

I’ve got a Seiko Speedtimer and think it’s great.

Feels good on, looks great and I’ve not had an issue keeping it charged, which I know is a worry for some.

They come in 43 as well, with a smaller lug to lug that would probably work for you.

·

Like @James12345 said, there’s no substitute. But I’ve still enjoyed my Pagani. That said, it’s made the itch for a real Speedy even worse!

Have you tried the 43mm? It fits a lot better without looking much different. It's a great watch.

What about the Speedy Triple Calendar or Speedy Reduced? Speedmaster heritage but 1/4 the price, cool and vintage. The triple calendar’s movement is based on the ETA 7751 and is easier to get serviced than the reduced’s module movement.

Agree they’re great watches, but also budget conscious and can’t get my head around the price premium they put on the 43(.5)mm version. $400-500 for 45 vs $800-900 for 43.5!

(As a point of reference, I have yet to spend over $500 for a watch.)

Between the 2 you mention, the Seiko Speedtimer would be my choice. However at the end of the day the Speedmaster is a chronograph and there are lots of options out there that fit the part. If you want a unique chronograph that doesn't break the bank but still has the tri-compax look, a Citizen Bullhead is an option. It's outside of the box and gives those black and white design details while carrying the chronograph functionality. And it's extremely wearable with its dimensions!

Yea the new 43mm Lunar pilot is the only answer.

If it weren’t twice the price of the 45mm 😣

Weird that I only find it on Jomashop. Citizen Web site doesn’t have it unless it’s Star Wars themed

I think these ones might be a JDM model. Foe some reason I vaguely remembered that being a thing when they were released a few years ago. 🤔 I guess I figured they would be everywhere by now! 😅

138 votes so far and the percentages have held steady since about the first 20! 👍

This has been a hoot! The best takeaway is that most here seem to want to prevent me from getting an inferior watch. 🥰

Next takeaway is, everyone is absolutely right in their answer given their perspective and the limited info I provided. Certainly no right or wrong here. So, if you're interested, here's a bit more.

From a chronometer perspective, I probably have all the tool I need here: (laps/splits included.)

And I have two other meca-quartz examples.

I guess it comes down to the fact that I support the idea of the moonswatch -- let's recognize this amazing timepiece and a role it played in history. However, the execution of the moonswatch, as a $260 plastic watch does not interest me, because I'm frugal ("cheap," if you must.)

So, someday soon, I may drop $100 on an inferior copy. And I'll have fun playing astronaut when I wear it. And someday in the more distant future, when the mortgage and cars are payed off, I'll see if I can swing the real deal. 😉

Hope you all had as much fun in this thread as I did! (But maybe I'm just odd that way...)

I picked the Seiko but would like to throw into the ring the Baltic TriCompax 🍻

A beautiful timepiece! But a bit outside my budget. I do appreciate all the great suggestions.

I think I’m headed to this, Dan Henry 1962. Bezel tachymeter is tad speedy, but color makes it clear it’s no copy.

And it doesn’t hurt that I am of the same vintage, 1962. 😉
