I think it really depends on the company and brand. Like Casio it's just expected that they are gonna be quartz, Citizen has their famous Eco-Drive, and Bulova with their UHF quartz that is gaining popularity. But if I was going to buy another brand that is more known for their mechanical movements I would shy away from their quartz models.
It's a real pain to get the spring bars to line up right with the bracelet, but that's not unusual for G-Shocks really. Other than that it was pretty easy and decent quality. I just got the steel one, not the titanium.
