I made a big mistake... AKA, how Brad Pitt made me realize that I shouldn't have sold my Breitling AVI 1953

Right here, at the 1:04:37 mark, you can see very clearly that Brad Pitt is wearing the Breitling AVI 1953 Re-edition in the movie, Bullet Train!

Image

Have you watched Bullet Train? No, of course you haven't. Why? Because you're too busy pretending to work on Friday afternoon, like me. No, it's time to drop all pretense of productivity, bust open a beer, and head over to Netflix, where you can stream this movie right now. Is it awesome? Absolutely. Is it hilarious? It is. Is there anything at all whatsoever better to be doing with 2 hours of your life than watching this movie? Absolutely not, unless you're Elon Musk. Elon, you get a pass - go spend the next 2 hours promoting your efforts to terraform Jupiter.

When I first saw this scene, I thought, "Wait... is that... what? Why does he have such an awesome watch on his wrist???" And then I remembered that he's a Breitling Ambassador! Nonetheless, he chose (or the prop department) chose one of the coolest Breitlings for the character.

I used to have this watch. It was very cool.

Image

But, you know, I made a deal with Oni, the demon of Japanese folklore...

Image

... to acquire my collection of GS, and as part of the deal, he required me to...

  1. Trade him all my Swiss watches, including the Breitling AVI 1953

  2. Give him eternal rights to my soul, and

  3. Help him pick up all his furniture and personal items from his ex's apartment - it was awkward, he wouldn't even make eye contact with her, even though they'd been together for like 6 years, so I helped him carry out his futon and all his Yankees memorabilia in total silence for like an hour

Anyway, seeing the AVI on Brad Pitt's wrist suddenly made me realize that maybe I'd made a mistake! Maybe I shouldn't have sold the Breitling AVI! I mean, if someone as cool as Brad Pitt is wearing it, shouldn't I also?

I mean, the dude is known for his good looks, but he's been in some of the most awesome movies of all time - and the best ones, like Bullet Train, were box office disappointments!

Image

Maybe I'll just go get this to drown my sorrows...

Image

Or, you know, for not much more than the bottle of Jack, I could get this...

Image

It's close enough, right?

How about you? Has Brad Pitt ever made you question your life choices? Is it time to divorce your wife and leave your children behind in order to date Gwyneth Paltrow or Angelina Jolie?

The answer to your final question is yes, of course. Then I look in the mirror and realize why I don’t. :-)

I have always liked the AVI and it is one of a few chronos that time and again I look at used prices. Here is the problem with the AVI: The Type XX exists, usually for a grand or two less.

Used Type XX's go for a grand less than the AVI 1953???

I love Brad Pitt but Bullet Train is a flaming pile of dogshit as movies go…

Right? Just on the steel models. Quick search while working, first result on Chrono24, $4500 ish. Could be the extreme example, but I don’t have time to check them all. Historically, I see them around $5k whenever I get a Chrono itch and go looking. Now that I say it, I’m likely blowing up my spot on stealth Chrono deals.

Okay, but that listing has no box and papers, and since it's from Japan, it was probably procured by the Japanese Yakuza, when they chopped it off the arm of a rival!

When I narrow it to watches produced 2021 - 2023, the lowest I'm seeing is ~$9.5k!

At this point in the afternoon, all I'm thinking of is getting over My Little Pony living rent free in my head. Bullet Train might be the cure for it, if not for the fact that Netflix banned password sharing and I need to save money for the next auction. I'm questioning all my life decisions at this point and my wife and kids have lost all respect for me.

So yes, I'd be down with Pepper Potts and or Maleficent...maybe both at the same time. They can be my Sugar Mommas and buy the Breitling for me.

·

The watch looks great. The film was not great sorry. I would say it was terrible tbh. Has he worn appealing watches in other films I wonder? Maybe time to hit the dvds!

·

Just pick up a Dan Henry and call it a day...😁

Never had an attachment to a watch because of a celebrity. Never seen the movie. Sounds like you didn't like the watch enough to keep it though...

At Home Depot doing adult stuff on a Friday night like all the cool people do and that had me laughing out loud. Joma has the most base one new for $7k, but here are some recent sales below. I have not looked at the age, but I’d agree newer ones are likely to be more expensive, but for the opportunity buyer, there are deals to be had, even if you have to throw away the hand it comes on.

OMG, how amazing would it be to marry Charlize Theron...

Image

... just so that she can bring you home one of these from the latest photo shoot?

Image

I'm really not into her, but I'd do it just for the watches!

Man! What's with all the hate? The movie was fun! It was meant to be a lighthearted comedy / action flick. You know, just a nice way to turn your brain off and laugh at some jokes and quirky situations for a couple of hours!

Edward Norton wears a Jazzmaster in Fight Club... and since he's actually Tyler Durden, does it count as the watch that Brad Pitt wore?

·

That is a mighty fine pilot chrono!

Yeah, after a while, I realized that all my Omegas and Breitlings were just for cosplay purposes. I mean, I liked pretending to be James Bond or an old timey pilot or whatever. And, then, I realized my true calling...

Image

... so went full weeaboo with Grand Seiko.

·
Image

This one is a close homage, right?

Get the watch man, I'm working on a post about scratching itches when my next one arrives.

·
Catskinner

Has Brad Pitt ever made you question your life choices?

No. I'm quite capable of doing that myself without the inspiration of Mr. Pitt.

I also own a Type XX. Sort of.

Image

The problem that I have is that I'm not watching as many movies as I used to do. I'm losing interest in the plot or get annoyed with the acting and I just quit, sometime within minutes.

It's a pity because watching movies with the GF at home with the killer HT setup used to be a favorite pastime. Anyway, when I also have to admit that when I do watch a movie the last thing that I pay attention are the watches worn by the actors.

How is the lume on the M-T?

i randomly opened breitling catalog and in love with this one top time line. its so beautiful, btw bullet train is a sh*t movie lol

Image

I'll allow it, but only because you have good taste in chronos.

Sugess is getting in on the act!

Pop quiz . Did Brad Pitt wear a watch in 12 Monkeys and what was it ?? i don’t know 🤷‍♂ I am asking 😂

Hmmm... I don't know! But, he should have been wearing this...

·

12 Monkeys is an all time favorite (Terry Gilliam fan), but I would have to rewatch it for the watch siting. “Burn After Reading” may be my favorite Pitt role.

Great post.

Terry Gilliam! Man, Brazil - the ending just wrecked me!

Loved that movie! The watch is meh...

And Brad Pitt can come over whenever he wants... 🙃

Whilst I appreciate Mr Pitt and the watch choices, I think there are two actors who I respect for their watch game:

1) and obvious, is Steve McQueen because he actually bothered to do his research into appropriate time pieces for the role. I’ve covered this before. Unfortunately, as hackneyed an answer as this is, it is a genuinely earnest response.

2) and I can’t believe I am saying this, but I’m always needing to know what Jason Statham has on his wrist. The Meg 2 has the new CWC 80s diver, at his request… and therefore I will be finding out what is next on his wrist for the next movie.

Bullet Train is a terrible movie for not making you want to buy a watch. Tangerine’s Cali Bubbleback is awesome.

·

I have heard… Perhaps they’ll give him a Hublot Big Bang

·

How is the lume on the M-T?

It's not the greatest but it does the job.

Just don't get stuck in a coal mine with it and no torch lamp because then you will be very sorry very fast.

affordable alternative? yess lets goo, colour combo is beautiful in this one 😍😍

I just got bullet train pitched to me last night when looking for something to watch 😂 too funny and if you miss the watch too much, you may have to double wrist two of your GS to keep you on the straight path 🫡

You should definitely watch it! It's light-heartedly and highly stylized. It's set in some over-the-top fictionalized universe, the way John Wick is, but it's got lots of slapstick humor!

I will most definitely take that into consideration!

Love the watch, might put it on my wishlist for the far future :D

The movie wasn't "deep" but very entertaining IMO.

The Mathey-Tissot is only $325! I think I may get this for myself as a Christmas present!
