Beginning Collector

I’ve heard varying opinions on Shinola, most recently their quartz products being expensive for what they are. While this may be true to some, the case is well made, it has a sapphire crystal, and has a nice weight to it compared to some quartz watches.

i was able to get this one at a very reasonable price , with it being very gently used. It’s now my favorite watch in my collection, as I’ve been chasing after a Shinola for years.

any other Shinola lovers out there?

I don't personally own a Shinola, but I have a family member who owns one and is a big fan -- it's pretty sweet and like you said, has some great weight and finishing to it.

I think a lot of the enthusiast annoyance with Shinola has to do with the Fossil Group roots and the way they adopt the marketing machine (high MSRP, high marketing push and fairly aggressive discounting).

That said, I do think they have some pretty decent design and watchmaking.

The Mackinac in particular is an awesome and unique looking automatic chronograph.

That watch is stunning! the color scheme truly pops, and the square case is super neat.

I've owned a couple Shinolas and both have been well made and great watches,

If you are just getting started in the hobby please realize that it's of little importance what other forum members or you tube "gurus" say.

They are not YOU.

Buy what pleases you.

Everyone else can pound sand.

Enjoy the hobby on YOUR terms.

You are fantastic! I love the term “pound sand”, it definitely describes how I feel when I hear these negative tidbits. Thank you!

I love that! I’m already looking into getting a leather strap for mine!

I know that feeling for a watch all to well. Shinola makes quality timepieces.  Enjoy your wrist time with that bad boy.

·

Very nice! I’ve owned a few Shinolas and loved each one. I have a few posts about them on my profile down there somewhere.

Nothing wrong with Shinola. I have a few in the collection. Very attractive watches.

The problem comes in with the fact they are sold in department stores at department store prices.

If you purchase them on the secondary market, you can get a reasonably nice discount from the department store price.

These are the ones I have in the collection (all quartz models):

I was given a white dial Runwell a few years ago and it very much started me on the road of watch collecting. I think they’re great. Some of the more recent models are nice too.

Shinola is a good brand. Heck, they're helping with the economy of Detroit and that city needs all the help they can get, so buy  to your heart's content and like other have said, the naysayers can go pound sand.

Funny, I was looking at this today. I was searching for a Monaco inspired design and this popped up.

I own a couple, and so does my wife. I do like the look, and they are well-made watches for what they are. The MSRP is high, but the service in the stores has been outstanding. ("Would you like to sample a local whiskey while you wait?") Their leather products are also very good, which includes their watch bands.

I have one! 😁… hmm haven’t worn it in months so maybe I’ll wear it today …

I mean parts are made in china (from what I’ve heard) but they’re assembled in Detroit.

i guess they’re “pricey” compared to other quartz watches but the fact that they’re assembled here, as well as quality of parts used and the smooth sapphire crystal make it worth the price tag for me.

My then 18 year old daughter wanted a Shinola about 4 or 5 years ago for Christmas.  Bought it and it looked nice.  She wears it frequently, and a few months back, I had to change the battery, so I gave it a “look see”.  Still very nice!

Gold case on the green bracelet is 🔥

There was a display of Shinola in our local jewelry store. I liked the colors they use but didn’t look at them very closely.
