Which watch for Watch shopping

Yesterday I sent in a question to on of the insta watch people for his Q & A.

What watch would you wear when shopping for a watch?

He looked at the question form someone involved in the watch retail world and answered well.

I was thinking more from the point of view that if I had a watch in mind, say a Tudor black bay 41 would I wear something similar to that watch in size and features say my Seamaster 300 or would I go wearing something totally different like my CWC G10 when going to the store so that I wasn’t comparing the two and possibly talking myself out of the purchase.

What’s other’s thoughts on this?

I don't think about it that much, usually. I just wear whatever I fancy on that day. However yesterday I collected my Hamilton from my local AD that I have a great relationship with and I wore my MoonSwatch purely because he hadn't seen one in real life yet.

Whatever you wear, you can be sure that when you take it off to try the new watch, they’ll say what a lovely watch it is and what great taste you have.

But it’s a G-Shock which doesn’t work? … Nevertheless a true classic, sir

I wear something different from the usual high street names, maybe Atelier Wen, Moels, Sturmanskie 31659. I don't really put much thought into it so it could be just whatever I've put on that morning. It's never a high end piece.

Something more expensive then that which you're looking to buy imo; bound to get better treatment at certain boutiques

Here is temptation to impress of relate s watch when going to an AD but honestly I would just put in what ever I want.

·

If the intent is to buy the watch, I wouldn’t wear anything so I can walk out the door with the watch on my wrist.

Now if I was browsing, I’d wear whatever Im wearing that day.

Depends. Visiting my local AD I don't give it any thought. If I'm going to a London AD those places are busy and they get a lot of tourists and window shoppers. I would say I've gotten faster, easier, more attentive service when I've been wearing something higher-end.

·

Never bought from a shop, or new. Only online used, I'm a cheapskate 😜

Did look at a North Flag years ago, wore my Aqua Terra because I thought they'd take me more seriously 🤔🤣

Didn't buy the North Flag, always will regret that & see it as the one that got away 😭

·

I wear whatever I feel like wearing. It’s THEIR job to impress ME. Not the other way around.

·

I am pragmatic, if a watch needs some adjustment to the bracelet and I know the seller, that is the watch I wear, if I am picking up a watch already ordered, I do not wear a watch, if I am visiting some higher end boutique I wear my Oris Diver 65 to get a sense of how regular customers are treated. I have been informed by veteran sales agents that they can usually spot the more serious customers even he or she is not wearing a timepiece.

A $10 Casio so you look poor and can drive a harder bargain.

I tried an Omega Speedmaster in a nice boutique while I was on a trip, and only had my G-Shock DW-5600 with me so I didn't even think about it. While taking it off to try the Speedmaster, I mentionned it's really not as nice of a watch, and the guy said something like "G-Shocks are god tier watches!". He was really chill about it and even offered to let me try on the yellow gold Speedy with green dial afterwards!

Besides the GOD TIER comment, that’s a really cool AD story. 🤣😂

Depends on what you are shopping for.

Whatever I’m wearing when I’m surfing the interwebs

It's a nice memory! The guy was so nice even though he probably knew I wasn't going to buy anything 😅

One of my friends took a picture from outside the boutique, and you can see I was clearly not dressed to go into a fancy place to try on expensive watches! 😂

My man you gotta tell everyone where this magical AD is. Five star review. I’d go buy a watch from that guy.

I learned that putting my watch on and off to try others on is a pain in the ass and next I go I intend on taking my watch off before I even get into a shop, or just not wearing one.

Gladly! It's a place called Bijouterie Mornier in Bordeaux, France. They had a very nice selection of different brands, and even the super fancy clock that JLC make.

It's quite a long trip to go there, at least from Montreal, but I was lucky enough to go to play a show in a small town about an hour outside of Bordeaux. It was a real treat!!

If and when I get to Sydney to look at the Castlereigh St Rolex AD I will wear my Tudor so they know I am into their zeitgeist and possibly in a position to be seriously taken as a customer ( hopefully ) . If I am happy with a model on wrist then I will attempt to put in a special order and put a down payment or deposit to purchase . This is my logic in this particular instance…

I'm pretty sure they're judgy until you start chatting and then maybe they change their mind if you're nice and a little bit knowledgeable about the watches you're looking at. :p
