What's the point of a watch roll for travel?

Hi all: New to the hobby so I thought I'd just throw this out there: I just don't get why folks go to the trouble of carrying a watch roll when they t...

This is an interesting question, and the responses have been great!  My $.02, I don’t see anything other than some sort of tool watch as badass.  Dress watches, expensive luxury watches are cool, but not badass.  Intentionality, history, a watch with a badass experience like war, exploration, discovery, etc.  Badassness can’t be bought, it has to be earned.

I agree on Omega.  Brilliant quality, yet the designs leave me cold.  Markers like shark teeth and hollow hands are not my preference.

I think someone should launch a consultancy aimed at assisting Ali express watches.  They are mostly pretty bad, imho.

Tudor sounds cheap?  I never thought so as the Tudor style suggests class, at least to me.  Agree on the others!

Smart.  I wish your story would get more attention.  Too many think their mechanical watches are invincible, they damage them subtly, then pass them on to an unsuspecting buyer.  Quartz for jobs that entail shock and vibration is the way to go!

I was going to say Steinhart myself.  Solid watches for the money.

Just saw this chat.  Very good points made by all.  My $.02, I just bought a Steinhart Ocean One Vintage GMT with patina dial.  It is a very close copy of the Rolex 1655 which hasn't been on sale for 40 years.  It seems like great value for money for me and I love the look of it.  I don't feel bad buying a homage of a watch whose only availability is for crazy money on the used market.  For me, I need a persuasive use case to justify an additional purchase.  I actually bought this rather inexpensive watch as a travel watch for when I go to dodgy places around the world and don't want to risk my Tudor Black Bay Pro, which looks very, very similar to it.  This Steinhart is of such good quality, it compares favorably with my BBP, imho.  I think homages make great choices for many and offer a terrific alternative.  I can remember when Tudor was considered a poor man's Rolex and that did turn me off the brand a bit.  But that was long, long ago and I think I've grown and matured in the hobby.  All the best.
