What's the point of a watch roll for travel?

Hi all: New to the hobby so I thought I'd just throw this out there: I just don't get why folks go to the trouble of carrying a watch roll when they travel.  They are bulky, large, heavy and are overkill, imho.  I travel with 2 or 3 extra watches and put each in a small pouch that takes little space and weighs nothing.  This protects them from scratches and offers a bit of bump protection.  I'm most concerned with scratches, not shocks as the worst that can happen is I drop my bag or backpack.  So, what am I missing?

The opportunity to buy something else, and to photograph it.

Of course you can put things in a sock for free, but that's not the real point here. Commerce!

Nothing much 😉 a watch roll offers a little bit more bump and hit resistance but other than that i think it is mostly for the presentation and look of your watches. Just make sure to pack your watches between your clothes when using pouches and that should take care of the bumps on the road 😁👍

LOL, I bet you're right for many!

It keeps them together and makes them a little harder to misplace.

I often just use a G-Shock tin if I'm bringing one watch in addition to what I'm wearing. But if I'm bringing two or are uncertain, I just throw the whole box in the bag and I'm good to go ☺️

The watch on my wrist goes with me when I travel, the others stay home.

This is exactly what I do. I only travel with two watches mostly, a GADA type watch (typically my Aqua Terra) and a beater (typically a G-Shock). I wear one watch on my wrist the entire trip and the other watch goes in the G-Shock tin. No watch rolls needed. I have multiple watch boxes for home use.

They make sense for show and tell when one is not at the ludicrous Pelican case or Haliburton  briefcase level yet. Or if one actually does for whatever reason frequently travel and carry multiple watches, I guess. But generally it's vanity, or supporting of artisans. I have a stupid traveling leather doodad for neckties that has literally never been used. It just seems like a thing that a polished person would have.

·

I use a leather roll where the watches go in pouches and then you just roll it up.  It fits in my carry on along with my laptop with no probem whatsoever.  I'll try to post a photo later.

I have a watch roll.  It allows me to have one bit of kit in which to place a couple of watches when I travel that is different from all the other packing cubes and gear bags.

I use cheap watch pods from Amazon. Two accounts for three watches, one on the wrist. I can also throw in a G-Shock, which doesn't need a case.

Actually, I use one daily to get to work. Since I commute by bike, I won't wear a nice watch while riding (I've already had a G-Shock meet the pavement). So, the watch of the day goes in a pod, a G-Shock goes on the wrist, and I change when I arrive.

I guess if you have space it's no biggee, either way.  I'm always trying to pare down my stuff and a watch roll adds a bit of bulk.  They are nice and offer superior protection, no question.

I've seen those and they look good, esp. for a watch on a bracelet.  Still seems like overkill, for me, except that you bike so that explains the need for a bit more protection.  Makes good sense and thanks for the photo!

I stuff them in socks....

Watch rolls work really well for straps that want to maintain a circular shape. Bracelets can normally fold up acceptably to fit in a travel box. I have both types, each has its good points. The main thing is they protect a watch a lot better than simply putting it in a pouch and putting that in your suitcase. And they really don’t take up much room. Besides it is an accessory that is fun to “play” with. 😁

Exactly, plenty of watches (e.g. integrated bracelets) that don't fold making it impossible to put into a pouch.

Integrated bracelets are a good exception.  Pity I don't own one!

I don't use a watch roll because they're cost prohibitive; as much as I'd like to use one I can't currently justify spending over $40 for a thing I'd only use a handful of times a year.

When I do travel with multiple watches I use this little black box that came with my Seagull 1963, which can fit two (maybe three if I push it) timepieces inside of it, which I feel is the most amount I'd ever need on a trip of any length. Even if I were to be on the other side of the planet for a month or even a whole summer I wouldn't be the kinda guy who thinks he needs seven watches with him; most of my watches are GADA or GADA-adjacent.

·

It’s nice to know they’re well protected and not jostling around loosely in bags.

Sock roll pictures, I'll have to try it one day 😂

I picked up a cheap one yesterday in preparation for a trip we're taking.

$21 and it seems pretty secure, now I just need to decide what I'm bringing with me...

They are great for show and tell, and when I travel its nice to be able to have the options to swap watches.
