Moonswatch, is there a price for its value?

Sorta been looking at swatches since I think it would be fun to have one in my collection, mainly to pay homage to their history. Was looking at the moonswatches as well as the controversy surrounding them. I understand some people like them since it’s a omega/speedmaster for a swatch price, where others say it’s a omega/speedmaster with swatch quality (not being that good). So I just wanted to know some people’s opinions on if there could be a good price for the value a moonswatch could provide, or if it’s just plastic junk that’s not even worth a $1. Personally if I found one new under $200, ideally around $150, I think it’s pretty fair.

EDIT: Speedmaster movement was a typo and anywhere I said speedmaster I really meant to say omega/speedmaster since I’ve heard people refer to the moonswatch as a omega/speedmaster for the price and quality of a swatch whether it be true or not. Sorry about the confusion

To be clear it is not a Speedmaster movement. If you think they are fun, grab it, it seems like that's a good expectation for it, as opposed to it being a reliable, long lasting timepiece.

In your opinion, what do you think would be a good value for the watch considering the longevity of the watch?

·

It is not a Speedmaster. It is plastic junk that’s worth about $125 bucks tops. They literally offer the same movement in a steel case for $100 less. You are paying for a pretend Speedmaster. I wear homages. But at least when I fork out the money it’s a piece of steel. It’s not “bioceramic” i.e. plastic.

The answer to that really has to do with what value you will extract from it. I am not trying to be obtuse, but there is a difference between whether you are grading it as a precision tool (in which case just use your phone) or something that you will get enjoyment out of.

·

As stated above, it is about as far away from a "Speedmaster movement" as it can be. As hard as they are to get there are still a ton of them out there so any future value is pretty much nil. I suppose if you could get one at half the MSRP you would get your moneys worth.

No matter what they print on the dial it's still a Swatch. and not a rare one.

To add to this, your personal value is going to be different than what the market value is. I think you’re going to be extremely unlikely to find one for under $200 in working condition as they’re a hot ticket and routinely selling well over MSRP.

It's a brilliant idea and Swatch have created a number of collectables. I don't own any yet but I love the concept and only the execution seems to generate any negative reviews.

·

Here in France they already sell for $100-$150 new with box and papers depending on the model on the secondary market, so the flippers are already taking a bit hit after the hype died down completely. The market is flooded, this website I'm looking at has thousands of them for sale.

In my opinion, this kind of disposable plastic quartz watch is not worth more than $50. Even for $50 you can get a better stainless steel automatic watch on AliExpress.

·

I’m a big Omega fan. But realistically the MoonSwatch is at best a $75 watch based on what it actually is. Pagani Design makes a better version, in steel, that can be had for under $100 all day long. I’m not sure I’d even pay $75 for a MoonSwatch. But I think that’s the realistic price.

Love to hear any time flippers get hoisted on their own petard.

The prices are certainly falling on certain models. Fun piece to wear on the weekends for sure. For some reason the MoonSwatch has really hit a nerve with some people...

·

I personally love them. I have a few Omegas and still love the Swatch version. I have opted for colors that are out of the ordinary so I can get fun colors without spending thousands. Yes, these are overpriced, but I am a sucker for a story and intention in a product. I believe these have both.

·

Bring on all the hate I love my Saturn moonswatch and my Swatch blancpain

·

They have done wonders for swatch ( not so much omega) but they are basically a swatch for twice the price due to the Omega homage. If you want one as long as you accept they are not very robust then get one but you can find far better watches that will last longer and are made far better I.e. G-shocks and standard swatch’s

·

Love Bulova Quality. Top notch brand. On there higher tier watches.

·

OP, as you can see from these comments opinions are "mixed" about the merits and value of the MoonSwatch 😂.

I would just say, in my personal opinion as an owner of one, you should buy a MoonSwatch because you like it and you want one, not because it's a cheaper Omega (which it's not), not because it's a high-quality piece of craftsmanship (which it's not) and not because it's popular (which as you see depends on who you ask).

I agree with many here that it's overpriced and I think a better price point would be $150-200 but clearly it sells just fine at its current price (and above) so the market has decided that it's priced appropriately. Also, I would argue that if you value the MoonSwatch just based on its build and technical ability then I think you also have to question the cost of any watch that costs thousands of dollars when the cost to make it is much, much lower. Just my 2 cents.

Overpriced, common, plastic and disposable. A money making exercise.

And yet.....

Lots of otherwise sane people love them and even collect them?

It really does take all sorts! One man's cereal packet toy can be another man's treasured collection piece. Objectively crap yet to some subjectively desirable!

·

Cool watch, build quality is worth about $25

·

They will either

1) always sell in decent condition for more than I'm willing to spend

2) sell for what I'm willing to spend but be junky enough I don't want it.

·

It's fun and I love it. If you think they look fun, then it's worth the price.

·

It’s a fun toy and hopefully inspired new watch nerds. I was at the swatch store this week looking at the Mission to Uranus (just the best one to buy as a conversation starter) and still can’t pull the trigger.

·

When I inquire about a watch I ignore every person with no first hand experience with it whether it be a Timex or a Rolex.

I also never give an opinion on watches I don't have first hand experience with and I wish that was a whole lot more common on WC.

I've owned Swatch watches since the 90's and other than wearing out a strap or replacing a battery I've never had one die. Not once...

I'm sure some Swatches have failed over a 30 year period just like watches that cost much more have.

Many of the commenters are unable to filter their "feelings" when giving their advice about a watch they've never handled. Most who bash the MoonSwatch were never Swatch fans in the first place yet they never pass up an opportunity to dump on it. Not even once...

Do I own Swatch watches? Many!

You misspelled objectively. Here let me help you: O.P.I.N.I.O.N.

They’re a lot of fun. I enjoy mine and would think about buying another. These are plastic watches which echo a Speedmaster with a cheap Quartz movement in them. What’s not to like? They are worth what you’re willing to pay and no more.

·

Fischer Price : My First Speedmaster.

I have the Saturn and quite liked it until I bought a real Omega. I haven’t worn it since.

Arguably yes of course! Two types of opinion with different criteria depending on your point of view. That's the point I suppose?

Still in my subjective opinion based on objective facts having handled several and with friends who own them......Still crap!

But if you love them more power to your elbow!
