Case size 34mm too small for a man?

So... There's a watch I have been eyeing, however it's 34mm, so just to see "how it feels" I've tried the new AT at 34mm and it felt so tiny!

Is it just me or 34mm is just too small for a modern male? Or am I just brainwashed because I grew up with a Speedy that's 42mm?

AT "just" for illustration ahem ahem

I'd say yes, with the exception being the smaller wristed fellow's

·

Depends on how small of a man you are...both in ego and stature.

I'm not going anything smaller though cause then it'll look like I took my wife's watch 😜

Medium built, 177cm or 5'10'' if you want it in freedom hamburger unit

Are we twins separated by the Atlantic? I'm 5'10" as well but my wrist is a little bigger at 6.5".

And yes, the only units that matter are IMPERIAL, not stupid metric bs. I blame the Brits for mind-f**king us all those years ago. #Merica

34mm is not too small.

ik that men in the past wore smaller watches, maybe this is my warped perception of things, but men were smaller back in the days as well? Or am I just stuck in "MAH BIG WATCHEZ HURR DURR" phase?

·

Short answer, no.

Long answer, for me at least is a long one… first of all chances are zero people you encounter in your day are going to consider such things, this is 100% about you and what you want to wear. I recently bought a small vintage 50’ Certina square tank style watch. It’s like 28mm across on my 7.5” wrist. Does it look small? Yes. Does it look good? Yes it does. I also wear the humongous OG Bulova Lunar Pilot on other days and can pass that pretty well too! A watch is an accessory as far as fashion goes, few people look only at your watch but more the entire picture of how you’re dressed and carrying yourself. I think if you are well put together and your watch isn’t actively an eyesore (let’s be honest some are) most people can pull off most things if they’re confident about it.

Lastly small watches are making a bit of a comeback fashion wise. I think they can look very good. Understated or ‘stealth wealth’ is in style for sure.

·

Not all that long ago it was considered normal and , to me , still looks normal.

BTW-WTF is a "modern male"?

·

You've been polluted by the 40+mm monstrosity. It's amazing what horrors one can become accustomed to and grow to see as normal.

The problem is dark dials. You need a white dial to make things look proper sized, says the guy with a 35mm white Timex on right now.

More importantly, who wants to look like a "modern man?" They are basically women. And women love oversized plate watches, which explains a lot.

A very brief deprogramming will get one to realize that a watch face should cover the entire span of the wrist. It should be on the wrist, not over it.

And yes, big fatsos were less common back before food science had invented cheap non-nutritive additives to bloat everyone.

I always love long answers!

Now, a square watch wears a bit different compared to usual watches, but I see your point. Well out together? Questionable most of times, but ppl say I have my own style. Now since new AT is a very close approximation of the watch I want, and I was shocked how small it felt, like that scene from Zoolander you know?

Yeah I'm aware of the sizes of watches decreasing, and thank cthulhu for that, I could't stand those dinner plates, however 34mm may be too small? Hence this thread

Well idk tbh, but like paradigm has shifted back in 80s? 90s? that watches should be around at least 38-40mm, me growing up in that era has left some traces

A fair point I guess, my first "real" watch was a speedy and I was 12? or 11? and I grew up with that, so that size became the norm for me, as in 42mm.

·

OK time to fess up I guess, and I will get a lot of hate for this lol, ik it already

The watch I'm considering is this

Yup, you knew it, an Omega, AGAIN, and with diamonds... and a blue MOP dial, not the manliest watch out there, but man, I love it, hence this thread

·

Swatch sell plenty of 34mm watches. I regularly rotate in the two smaller Swatch's I own. Would happily get a 34mm stainless steel (or titanium) if more widely available.

Not a problem...my entire collection is mechanical...

99% of mine is mechanical/tuning fork as well, with a few vintage digital. I had pretty much nothing to do with quartz till I got these Timex Type 62.

·
KCSpike

That's mechanical with a quartz regulator.... mostly mechanical

And a technical marvel at that!

GTFO your wrist is plenty big compared to us sub 16cm gang XDDDDDDD

Is it tho? cuz I'm seeing some big wrist fellows walking around and thinking that if my genetics would've been better I could've had those wrists😄😄

·
Crazy_Dana

That is a Grand Seiko, what does it have to do with this? I'm not claiming this is high horology. I just said I happen to like them. This is Big Ben. It has every bit as much to do with what I was saying as your Grand Seiko.

Look man, I'm from the planet "toothpick wrists" ok? XDDDDD

·

No, I really need to stop. And I don't like the light colored one anyway. I just want to find the blue one.

It's not that ridiculous to be honest. And since this design is unisex it's super fine for a man to wear this watch if they want to.

·

I find my roleex op 36 mm just wears as well as any of my other 40mm plus sizes rolex, omega iwc etc.. it should be fine

·

Absolutely not, the idea there is a case size too small for a man is ridiculous. If you like the look of the watch on your wrist it doesn’t matter if it’s 42mm or 28mm.

The idea that a watch should have a certain presence on a wrist is absolute crap. It’s completely up to you, it’s your choice and there are no rules!🖖🏼

I, for reference, have a 16.5cm/6.5 inch wrist and I do prefer smaller watches. My upper size limit for everyday watches is 37mm diameter and 44mm lug to lug. My dive watch, which I only wear whilst diving, is bigger of course but as a tool it does not need to fit into my sizing preferences.

Heres my Citizen with the previously mentioned specs on my wrist and as you can see if fills out the wrist quite nicely (which is appropriate for such a sporty/field watch).

If i were you, I would not dismiss the AT 34 due to its "too small" size (I've been looking at this model aswell). Especially because your wrists are even a tad smaller than mine and the Aqua Terra represents a good mic of elegance and sportiness and should thus not wear hugely on ones wrist.

Yeah good call, right now, I'm swinging back and forth between the bling AT and Dynamic III Marui

Basically most military watches (part from divers) from WW2 to Vietnam were c34mm. Even looking to 1980s and 1990s many high end watches were smaller eg Rolex Day Date and Datejust. Dive watches tended to be a bit bigger

The bigger watches were a 2000s phenomenon.

·

34-36 mm should be fine... unless you are a huge guy

If you are, then a monster like this should be fine
