Grail or exit?

I recently was able to obtain my grail watch, after many years of pining. And while I’m only a few days in, I don’t really want anything else taking wrist time. The GMT is a perfect daily watch for me - sporty, classy, functional, and comfortable.

But whether this is truly an exit watch or just an introduction to a whole other level of obsession is unclear. Have any of you gotten the watch that you thought would scratch every itch, only for it to lead to even more? What is this crazy hobby of ours?

After I got my gmt master and sea dweller, I basically liquidated about 15 really nice watches. As much as I still like them, they just wouldn’t get any wrist time anymore. I found what I like and I’m good with being a 2 watch guy (and a few beaters). It’s been years and I don’t see me getting back heavy into collecting.

Haha, there is no exit from this crazy train.

I did the same thing but with an Explorer II and a DateJust. Basically everything else went and those two get like 98% of my wrist time (and honestly the Explorer II alone gets like 80%). It's been years and I'm totally content with my two.

I have a theory that after acquiring that long sought after aspirational piece which way one goes is all dependent on the individual's circumstances and commitment.

Im talking to a licensed therapist about this tomorrow. 😉🤣

·

Feel free to exit but we’ll see you next year 🤣

·

I'll leave you with lyrics from Hotel California. You can check out anytime you like but you... well you know the rest. Welcome to Hotel California 🤣

In 2017 I also got my grail watch, a Rolex GMT Master II, but on the contrary, I cannot use it as a daily watch due to insecurity I would have already been robbed in the middle of the street, so for daily use I have others and my grail for the weekends

How much time ya got?😉

Can’t go wrong with a Pepsi GMT🔥. I too think I’ve purchased my last grail watch and then somehow a new watch catches my eye… we’ve all been there😂😂

Love this GMT. Beautiful watch. 🔥🔥

Thanks

·

Congratulations.

Nice watch and nice wrist shot:)

I would recommend to think not ether way. At least not for now. Instead just spend time with your watch.

And one day you’ll maybe see another watch that grabs your attention and then you’ll make your decision one or the other way.

But until then just rock it, cuttle and love the watch 😉

·

Every watch I buy I think this could be it until I put the next watch on my wrist. Just saying

·

I just start climbing higher up the ladder

·

It’s called Honeymoon period! The addiction will eventually kick in and you will find yourself in a dark alley looking for a new piece.

·

With every watch I've owned, I'm seemingly opened to new styles materials designs etc

I think pining for new stuff is just natural

·

Wait a few months 🙂 Also, remember that enthusiasm is not about finding the perfect piece.

·

For me, my Grail watch acquisition (explorer 1) just defined as high I wanted to go for watches in price terms. I have kept on collecting but for quite cheaper watches, and honestly I prefer this than having 2 premium watches. The Rolex is my king watch, but not the one I wear the most.

·

Yes. You'll become a strap collector now 😜

·

I have a Tudor on the way. I hear ya. But I like different watches. Part of the game. And try it on a strap or two. Different look, same watch.

·

The funny thing about our compulsion is it's your grail until it's not😄 You'll find that sometimes what you think is your ultimate grail might not be once you have it and you begin to wear it every single day! You'll notice that it might just be too heavy, big, small, uncomfortable or it just doesn't fit your lifestyle after all. I have a Pam 382 bronzo and it was my all time grail, but after owning and wearing it for the past 8yrs I find myself reaching for other watches these days. Maybe it's because I'm now 48 and don't like swinging a 10lb barbell around 😂 don't get me wrong I still love the watch and I will keep it in my collection forever and hand it down to my grandson but it's big.

It is the dopamine from the excitement and anticipation of the acquisition that will pull you back in. I was very happy for 7 years with my 3 watch collection which included my (wouldn’t say grail) but certainly what I believe to be the single best watch of all time, No date 114060 sub….. and just like that I now have 4 watches after finding myself stalking and obsessing over a two tone santos. So long as you’re financially able you should just go with the flow and see where it takes you. Like most addictions, it’s easier to quit if you never say never but lead yourself to believe that the power sits solely with you and you are making the conscious decision. Either way, I’m sure with that beauty in your wrist the itch may stay scratched for some time so enjoy it! Particularly in those wonderful stages where you find yourself staring at it for just a bit too long 😊

I also own the no date 😉👍🏽 and thought I would be content but I seen a Grand Seiko a few weeks ago and haven't been able to sleep since 😂😂

I'm afraid this hobby is like Hotel California, buddy 🤣

There are quite a few threads on here where people are so sure they have found 'the one' watch. It's a very real feeling. It happens. It will likely change... in three months, six months, 12 months, five years... whatever. But for the time being it's the whole world to you, so enjoy it. I think it's nice to find something you can be really into. Rare in this world.

·

I attained my grail watch in April 2023 this year but I am currently hooked and obsessed with Rose Gold Vacheron Constantin Overseas Date blue dial and gunning for it as my "exit watch"... see how it goes...

·

Very easy for the GMT to become a daily wear. I went almost a month when I first got mine with absolutely no desire to wear anything else.

Clearly I managed to break that cycle though 😂

There's a typo. It's spelled Rolex

Manny that’s jacked up , stay safe :)

Yep, thanks

·

I acquired the Black Bay 58, and it caused me to begin desiring Rolex watches. I think that I could possibly afford one or two of the nicer Rolex pieces I'm into, within the next 5 years, but at the same time, I don't think it would be realistic for me to enter into that buying range.

Your comments about the Rolex GMT Pepsi are the type of stuff that us watch nerds have to live with. I got the same watch (Rolex GMT Pepsi) and wore it for about 4 months before taking it off the wrist. Now, I have it in its original box and have not worn it for many months. I keep it because I know my feelings could easily change again and this is a terrible time to sell a piece like that, whether it is discontinued or not.

The more important reason not to move in from it is that we fall in and out of favor with different watches in our collections over time.

Look, I have recently purchased both the Tudor Pelagos FXD Black as well as the original Blue dialed Pelagos FXD watch. These 2 Tudors have been on my wrist since October with 3 watches from the crown not getting any wrist time.

The key is to buy the watches that you want and are able to afford. The infatuation period will wear off with any watch over time. The keepers are the ones that you always end up coming back to. Those are the watches that you end up missing and wanting back on the wrist. That is why the selling decisions are the most important .

Your Rolex GMT Pepsi is part of your watch journey and I hope you enjoy it and own it for many years. All hype aside, it is a wonderful watch.
