Maybe not a top choice for a true watch nerd, but I think the Tag Aquaracer could be considered. The new proportions and dial refinements are great, and the price can likely be negotiated as well.
Brand matters in all things we buy/consume - Nike shoes, Mercedes cars, Lululemon workout gear, etc. But Casio isn’t a great example of your point, as I think many people buy Casio because it’s a Casio (and not some no-name digital/beater watch).
