Tudor Black Bay 36mm or used Rolex Datejust?

I’ve been a fan of Rolex since I was young. I’m around 24 years old, and recently getting into the watch game and learning more about different companies then just only Rolex. I’ve been considering picking up a used datejust for sometime now or i’ve been debating on getting a Tudor BB 36 for the same price for a new watch instead of a used one. (Also maybe holding off on a Rolex until i’ve earned one)

Let me know your thoughts and what you guys would do?

My first thought is to get a the new Tudor as it comes with a warranty. The used Rolex, not so much.

My best advice - You are STILL young. Put the money in a 401k and get a new Rolex once you’ve got some wealth built up. (Admittedly, I have no idea what your finances are like, but you’re asking about buying a used watch, so I assume you’re not independently wealthy.)

My second best advice - Don’t get either and keep saving for a new Rolex.

My most realistic advice - Get the used Rolex.

My REAL best advice - Don’t buy the Tudor. It’s a great watch, but you don’t want a Tudor. You want a Rolex. You’ll end up regretting the purchase. It will be a very expensive mistake.

I say that as an owner of a Black Bay 36. They are terrific watches. But, I have no desire for a Rolex and I wasn’t settling when I bought mine.

Living at home on salary, roth is maxed and 401k is done through work. But after hearing if your advice might pick up a Seiko and call it a day!

This is the best decision. Just keep buying Seikos and pining for the Tudor/Rolex 😂

checked out your profile, might pick up an A168 for the fun nights out!

Isn't the depreciation on Black Bays like the steepest thing ever? I wouldn't encourage anyone to buy those new. Of course I'd go Datejust as it is one of the three models of theirs worth having.

Of course if you want to keep buying watches throughout your life, I'd progress slower. I don't get why anyone wouldn't want to stop though.

It can be a nice Seiko with sapphire crystal and just slightly misaligned.

As long as it’s ticking! Right?

It’s like some people are addicted to not buying watches. Such a pity.

I'd hold off on the used Rolex until you can buy new if that's what you really want.

Maxing out that Roth is the win down the road 👏🏻 in your 20’s you can’t see how crucial it will be but once you’re rounding 3rd you’ll be happy you did…lots of cost effective options for now

Rock the Tudor, a brand widely respected across many measures and suitable for enthusiasts regardless of age. Would your Rolex be viewed as a flex? Quite possibly.

·

If the bb36 is the same price as the rolex I'm assuming you can afford either, why do you need to 'earn' the Rolex? There is nothing special about a watch, if you can afford it then you already earned it.

I'd do the Tudor or a Grand Seiko - stick to stealth wealth until you move out of your folks' place. The Rolex is nice but it's definitely more of a statement piece, and will really stand out among people in their 20s. If you get something nice that most people won't recognize, then you'll have the benefits of enjoying a nice watch without the risk of unwanted attention.

Totally second the stealth wealth advice. Unless your lifestyle or job call for a Rolex flex, save that dream for when you feel like you've really earned it. You'll know when the time is right.

At 24 if you're not maxing your 401, then I'd stick to something more modest if you just have to buy a watch. Seikos are great, as are many other independent and homage watch brands at or under $1k

Grab a Christopher Ward and save yourself some money. Save the Rolex for a major event in your life

The Blackbay 36 is an amazing watch that is a great GADA and could be a complete one watch collection. But you have smelt the Rolex Kool Aid and you want a datejust.

Best advice is get a datejust.

As long as it's been properly serviced and checked a vintage datejust is a no brainer and will last for years, they are no more fragile than a new version.

·

I would look for a lightly used Tudor as they can be had for a lot less than retail. If you really like a jubilee bracelet you can always get one from Uncle Straps. Then you got your Tudor and have a small fund to start saving for a brand new Rolex DJ!

Definitely not 401k LOL

Being able to get money into both is still impressive. Maxing out that Roth, building YOY, your older self will thank you.

·

Buying new is a serious luxury. If you're trying to make your budget go further, I'd recommend buying a good pre-owned piece.

Buying new, almost guarantees you losing ~$1000 on the value of the watch as soon as you step out of the AD.

Either, get the Rolex, people will treat you better.

OR get the TUDOR pre-owned and invest a little into your new Rolex fund.

·

A used Datejust is better value than a new Tudor. The Rolex loses the seller's profit where the Tudor dies in depreciation plus the huge profit margin they take. Probably 50% by the 1st year. The used Rolex has better value retention.

·

Your thoughts aeem to be right on..Buy the Tudor and enjoy it🎯

·

I am very partial to the Datejust. Especially the older ones. My favorite of all is this 2001 vintage piece.

Warranty on an older Rolex isn’t a huge concern. These watches were built to last generations. And if cared for, they do.

Been trying to find a vintage datejust for a good deal. The hunt is hard lol

“Good deal” is very relative. Fakes and Frankenwatches abound.

A good solid piece will set you back about $5000.00. Plus or minus.

But, if genuine and original, it’s worth it (to me anyway!).

Get a used blackbay to play with and save for a rolex.

Tudor, all day.
