Partner's Opinions and Watch Collecting

Has your partner's opinion ever swayed you on a watch you bought (or didn't buy)?

For example: I had my eye on a Spinnaker Croft for a while but I went with the limited edition because my girlfriend loves skeleton watches! I also keep it on a leather strap because those are her favorite.

There was a watch recently that I was on the fence about getting. I was pretty ambivalent about the dial as a whole; there were elements I liked and elements I didn't like. I just couldn't decide, so I asked my wife what she thought of the watch and she wrinkled her nose at it, letting me know she really didn't like it. Her opinion decided my own, and I passed on it. The watch in question is the new Islander #ISL-136, which is the new racing style Islander with the Gulf Livery colors.

Two of these watches I bought without input and two of these watches I was very swayed by my spouse's opinion. 😄

I would have gotten this one, but my wife said, "What are you?  6 years-old?"  Now I regret not having said, "Yes!  Yes, I am!" every day.

You and the Mrs. need counseling. That is the Grail Watch of Finland.

I was actually looking at that one!

My girlfriend loved the #ISL-133 with the black mop dial but it sold out before could get one

You should have! Honestly I feel like it would have grown on her eventually. How can you hate such a cute dial??

Based on my experience I'm gonna guess they liked the Cartier and the Hamilton. My girlfriend is a fan of simple, uncluttered dials.

Actually it was the Hamilton and the Citizen! Hamilton for the reason you mentioned (vs. another Hamilton pictured below).

Citizen, she told me that it was surprisingly clean looking despite the clutter, to which I agreed!

No, when I want something and it calls me no one can talk me out of it.  She does get annoyed when I get more than 4 packages a week and they are all watches.

·

My wife has no input and never really comments on any of my watches only to say "well that looks nice" is about it from her.

By the way nice Spinnaker, I have the exact same watch buddy, so great choice 😀

I was considering a Monaco. Not super seriously, but just starting the process. So while we were out I stopped in an AD with her to try one on. I asked her what she thought.

She said it was probably the ugliest watch she had ever seen.

There was no amount of McQueening that was going to erase that in my head, so I stopped considering.🤣

·

I can't think of a time mine has poo-poo'd anything I was enthusiastic about. Fortunately we have complementary tastes but I do love throwing something out ridiculous just to get her reaction. 😂

·

Absolutely. If she doesn't like I don't buy.

Is that a Choomah on the dial?

·

Yes!  I generally prefer bracelets, but a distressed, breathable leather or canvas strap works for me as well.  Unfortunately my wife thinks straps look toy-like, so it’s almost always bracelets for me.

·

Yes my gf is into watches as well so she has a very STRONG opinion about Brands, Sizes and colors haha usually we agree except i love Seiko and she doesn't at all :p

I saw a video yesterday where he did say he would be getting more of the #ISL-133 models in at some point.

If the wife says she hates it, I usually double-down. Case in point, my Bubble. If she likes them I never see them again sometimes, like my Colt.

If she doesn't like it she won't steal it! The logic is sound

My wife has turned against TIffany blue. It doesn't worry me. I don't care about it. Sniff. It's not like I'm upset or anything. Just a brave little soldier.

Stay strong, friend. You're braver than the troops

Married 34 years now and my wife and I don't input each others personal items. Trust is a valuable thing. Comment on the makeup your wife buys and see what she thinks of your advice. There is your answer. Taste is yours alone, and if they say anything bring up her makeup.

"And how much did you pay for that black colored pencil again, hon?"

Yep - once bitten, twice shy

·

She doesn't comment on watches or firearms. I don't comment on purses or plants. Sounds fair to me.

·

my gf would suggest me to look for a time in my phone, and dont waste money to another watch 😂

·

My wife loves chronographs which I didn't realize when I bought my grail Speedy Pro. I was so shocked at the instant sign off and encouragement to buy right away that it pushed my normal fence sitting cheap a$$ self to pull the trigger.

The Speedy got me into the watch hobby (my watch before was just my one watch daily wearer). Now, every time I drag my wife watch shopping, she fixates on chronographs and always has me try them on (not that I'm complaining).

Nice skeleton watch. Crap, now I kind of want one. Wait, it's a limited edition? Off to see if it's still available.

·

I was shopping with my wife early on and she asked me why I keep buying the same watch over and over again.  I then realized that it was time to broaden my stylistic horizons.

She's got good taste!

I think it was 1000 pieces but you can still pick them up. I got mine used for a really good price

So, your spouse like chronos👍

Indeed she does! Though she has no chronos herself 😂

·

I constantly make fun of my husband’s smartwatch, but it doesn’t seem to be working 🤷🏻‍♀️

Keep trying! Don't give up hope

·

I usually ask her opinion to let her know that a new watch is on the horizon, sort of priming the pump.  She does have great style/taste so I do take her suggestions into consideration.  She always finishes with "but I'm not the one that'll be wearing it".
