What watch do you love but can't bring yourself to buy and why?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has a watch or two they really like but can't bring themselves to buy (Seiko 62MAS re-issue anyone? ☻).

I've got a few but one that comes to mind is the new Desert Red variant of the Serica 8315 GMT.

I can't bring myself to spend almost $2K on a micro brand - especially one I can't see in the metal pre-purchase and has no local after sales support, particularly when watches like the Longines Spirit and Avi Big-Eye or FC Highlife can be picked up for (almost) the same money.

There are many. I've come to realize I can't have them all, so I've become much more selective about which ones I do buy.

I find that if I give myself 1 - 24 months to think about it, I can talk myself out of most of them. :)

For me it's:

  • Omega Aqua Terra small seconds at 6 with white dial 'deck'

  • Longines Lindbergh vintage 37mm (not the new one)

  • JLC Polaris Memovox

And any Omega Seamaster with the 1120 movement and related, that I do not yet have.

new to the hobby and it was like that for me for a bit (with regards to microbrands)

in the end, the Serica was too good for me to pass. so i did get it (after a decent amount of "research"). i also have the 5303 on order 😅

it did help that i live across the border, AND they have local after sales service where I live.

I Cant bring myself to buy a Furlan Marri chronograph. Gorgeous dial, finishing, and I can use a dressy bicompax chrono in my collection. But the asking price for what is essentially a meca quartz is very steep.

Yeah. I can understand that.

Great design, attention to detail etc. - I'm not a huge fan of mecha-quartz chrono's though, that squishy pusher action!

Yeah - that helps.

I'm a fan of the brand and have a 4512 TXD that I absolutely love, will never sell. The quality is excellent for the money (mines an early pre switch to COSC cert. movement and was a sub $1K buy). But I'm in Australia - don't want the hassle of having to rely on after sales service half a planet away. The lack of a bracelet was a factor too.

oh I think they have a service center/authorised watchmaker down under now.

atleast that's what it seems like from their support page. https://www.serica-watches.com/en/support/

and that's a beautiful watch with the tuxedo. I hope they bring it back.

·

I love this watch but yeah. 2k is a lot. Not sure which one is my choice

·

Any Grand Seiko or Omega

GS because i want in the fly adjacent

Omega hate the Helium value and not a fan of the bracelet. Also i feel they have gotten lazy. Its all too bulky, then need to inovate and get things back to managable sizes

·

I’d love to get a UN freak, but pretty strong doubts I’ll ever spend well over 20k on a watch!

(If I sold my whole collection I’d be getting close though!)

For me its the Longines Spirit. It's $2000-2500 and it's a field watch. It is Cosc certified but it's still a field watch. I love how it looks but I can't/won't spend that much.

When I got my first mechanical watch, I binged on so much watch content. My wishlist grew with each new Teddy Baldassarre video. It was as if a whole world of novelty opened up, and I indiscriminately wanted to add so many watches to my collection.

It wasn't until after I experienced falling out of love with a watch that I learned the value of slowing down, and enjoying what I have before adding to the collection. Just because I think I love a watch doesn't mean I'll truly connect with it in a meaningful way. Some watches just clutter the collection, and only distract me from the pieces I really enjoy wearing. Better to spend the day with a watch I already love, than to waste it trying to love another.

I've had my eye on this Patek for a while now:

But I just can't pull the trigger on it, due to it's $721k cost. I just can't. Literally, I cannot. 🤣

The Tuxedo is awesome! I am enjoying my 4512 California Dial.

I also agree! I feel that way about all expensive field watches.

·

Can relate🤣

·

I can't bring myself to buy another dive watch. I love so many but they'll have to wait until the half dozen I own have worn out. Around 2090 I think 🤔

·

Oris pro pilot x. Love the case and bracelet and dial looks fine. The printed indices with weak lume was the deal breaker.

Tudor pelagos 39. Great size, good looks. I have yet to get over the blunt hour hand and no date.

Tudor pelagos 500m - blunt hour hand. Almost pulled the trigger on this one but the example i was shown at a local AD (not boutique) was missing 1 lume tickmark from the bezel. The watch was brand new and had all stickers attached. I was shocked.

·

Love the new desert red! I live in France so all of the negatives are gone, making them my favorite watch brand period hahaha. Try them out! They do have partner watchmakers in the US from what i know, try sending them a message through Instagram asking about it.

·

Yeah, I caved and ordered a Christopher Ward 12. Every time I see something else, I start thinking, "that doesn't costuch more..."

I'm a fan of the brand (I have the 4512 TXD). Great design, excellent quality and very good finishing (for the price).

Now - due to the added expense of COSC certification - I'm not sure they're a value proposition. And micro brands need to be a value prop, cause I'm sacrificing brand security, history and the service / support of a boutique / AD network.

I'm in Australia - they've recently established in country repair service but as long as I can buy (for example) a Longines Avi Big-Eye and/or Spirit for approx. the same money it's an easy decision.

More than a few on that list for me. But two spring to mind. First, the Seiko SPD145 (the 62MAS reissue). I've come oh so close to pulling the trigger more than once. But as much as I love Seiko, I loathe the 6R movement in it! Same story with the SPB153 Captain Willard reissue. Love the watch but will not buy anything with a 6R movement. I've got three 6R powered Seikos and their accuracy leaves much to be desired considering the price point. Not to mention I already have two Seiko divers. I'm at the point where I can't justify to myself spending money on a watch type from a brand I've already got more than one of in the collection.

I Have the same bad taste for the 6R movement. I heard you can get it regulated by a watchmaker and it would run fine after that. The movement and watches are so mass produced that seiko doesnt seem to bother fine tuning their accuracy. That's why the wide range of stated deviation. Such a shame for such beautiful watches and for the prices that they ask for. I'm a seiko fanboy but i'm slowly clawing my way out of that rabbit hole and expanding my brand lineup to more than just the seiko group.

·

You should never say never. I thought I'd say a Lange 1 but if I sold a few watches it could be feasible so I'll go way outside my comfort zone and say an ALS Datograph.

Strongly second the practice of giving yourself time. 2-3 months is my personal sweet spot

·

Nice approach. £535 is the most I've spent on a watch and that was to celebrate a promotion. A Rolex Explorer is my grail but I too am not sure I could ever justify spending that kind of money. When I'm 40 I might allow myself a £1000 watch. My collection is only 3 watches at the mo and I like to keep it small to ensure I get the most out of each one.

I love the green Citizen in your collection btw!

I could write you a list…

At least when we literally cannot, that makes it easier.
