Unpopular Opinion? Citizen make a much better introduction to the watch world than Seiko.

I absolutely ADORE this citizen Garrison. Small, uber comfortable, works with so many straps and is ultra reliable with a set & forget Eco drive movement. Honestly, you can see what folks dig deep and buy chronomasters and sell everything else.

Seems like citizen are slowly pushing sapphire for watches under 400bucks now too, which is amazing as it's always a slight gripe that they use mainly mineral crystals.

I think the quality of the Citizen range at the lower end is more consistent than Seiko. I have models from three different ranges and all are well made.

Careful, you'll get banned for saying such things !! 😉😂😂

I think you are absolutely right. Seems like their bottom end and top end stuff are consistent in their brilliance. It's that 500-1000 range where it's tenuous. Although I do like their automatic diver, that's quite sexy.

News, ordered my first Citizen might be here for xmas. I think they are on the rise also but a tad slow, then need to expand on their range.

The new one? Yeah I'm tempted myself. Maybe I'll treat myself after Christmas 😂

Yeah the newest vintage "reissue" one, to my eyes at least it's absolutely stunning.

Some of their sizing is all over the place for everyday watches: you think your onto a winner then you see 43mm for a normal non diver sports watch. But I'll definitely be buying more in future. They have a new budget dive style watch that is absolutely stunning.

Yes I have noticed their size gaffs !

·

Totally agree. In fact I think Citizen is the sleeping Giant in many ways with their vast empire of subsidiaries across the world. As mentioned above, in the lower end, Citizen seems to be able to pump out far more interesting and higher quality watches at a very consistent level. The issue they are having is in the higher end, trying to compete with Grand Seiko, their offerings are a bit too similar in many ways, focusing on textured dials and what not. They have a vast amount of IP to draw from so I think they will get it right in the near future.

This is on my list 😍

I was fortunate to visit Japan last month and over there the price difference between citizen and seiko is even more jarring.

Tsuyosa, nb1050/60 and fujistsubo are such good price / perfomance watches.

But weirdly I think they are still missing the "charm" Seiko has

The charm that make us go through bad QC, subpar movement and mineral crystal 😂

Mine too! 🌈

Citizen keeps making watches that are too large for my taste, so therefore this is not much of an issue for me. Nor do I really buy a brand, but an individual watch.

·

I agree! I feel WHEN citizen produce a Great watch their price to quality is INCREDIBLE! I actually prefer citizen to Seiko. The problem is that they make A LOT of watches, which big percentage is…rather strange. Non the less I definitely have a Citizen bug and I catch myself scrolling through WRUW and always clicking when I see citizen without a hesitation. I don’t know, the more I look the more I like this cluttered dials. Still atm I only have two automatics which are almost like an exception to citizen portfolio. I ❤️ them very much! I gotta buy some cluttered eco drive in the future

The Citizen Garrison was my first real watch and introduced me to the hobby and now I expanded into Grand Seiko and Rolex. But recently I picked up a more higher end Citizen, the Citizen Attesa Yozora limited edition. This reignited my love for Citizen and who knows maybe in the future I might add a chronomaster to the collection. Like cmon it's a radio controlled atomic moonphase how dope is that.

@Gazdev Which reference is it?

·

I’ve been entertaining the idea of picking up a solar, radio controlled watch (or clock) to use as a reference to set everything else by. Can anyone suggest a Citizen that would work in that roll and be a fun addition to the collection?

·

I have that same rugged little watch which I got very cheaply. I still wear it occasionally on the OEM strap when doing gardening or other tasks where my ‘nicer’ watches might get knocked about a bit.

That, in the best way possible, it's outrageous. I love it.

Citizen kills it with Titanium, Echo-Drive and even their autos in this marketspace. Citizen, Bulova this year with the Jet Star & always the Lunar Pilot, and Casio own this territory. IMO Seiko departed the space with the SKX dying off

Go to the web page , You will freak out how many they have. The aviation line almost unlimited in style and colors.

·

I also have the Garrison with the Kaki strap, it’s a fantastic GADA watch. I love it ! And excellent value!

·

I do not care if it is unpopular. It is true. I have 4 Citizen watches and only 1 Seiko.

I'll take a solar quartz movement over a mechanical one all day, every day.

As for Citizen specifcally, I don't own one for two reasons:

1. They make a lot of chonkers and my wrist is bird-sized.

2. I personally think their design language needs help. It's very... confused. It tends to come across clunky and, well, almost aggressively American, which is weird. 🤔 It doesn't move me. Personal preference, of course.

That said, yours is one of their best designs! Solar watches are the future. 😎

The real future is solar meca-quartz. No battery changes and a sweeping second hand from a quartz. But apparently I'm the only one who thinks so.

I would love that combo 👍🏼

·

Counting both you and me, that makes two people on Earth that think this is a good idea. It seems like a no-brainer. Maybe there's some obvious technical reason it can't be done? But there already are mecha-quartz chronos. And Citizen has been making affordable solar movements forever and Seiko has mecha-quartz down to a science. I just don't get it. What's so difficult about making a three-hander watch that is solar to eliminate battery changes, and mecha-quartz to have a sweeping second hand?
