Seiko flightmaster - what’s your quartz go-to?

This is the Seiko SNA411P1, known as the Flightmaster. Seiko, the creator of the worlds first quartz chronograph, released this watch as one its large quartz chronograph lineup.

Image

The SNA411 became popular because of its 200m water resistance, made possible by screw down pushers and crown, along with its slide rule bezel and busy dial. Its look is reminiscent of a Brietling Navitimer, serving as a more affordable alternative to that style of pilots watch.

Image

The quartz movement boasts a chronograph with split time functionality, date, audible alarm, and the ability to track a different time zone. Its feature packed movement and capable specs make this a great choice for a tooly pilots watch.

I like my watches to have lots of strap options, and I rotate the flightmaster between the oem bracelet, a CNS brown suede strap, and several different AliX MN straps. The new Seiko Solar Quartz Speedtimer lineup has gained a lot of popularity, but this watch definitely earned a spot in the list of classic collectible Seikos, and I prefer its tough, practical vibe.

In my journey to collect the perfect 6 watch Seiko collection this watch fills the role of both Chronograph and pilots watch, while meeting my requirements of tough specifications and strap monster status.

Image

A couple of complaints on this one are the 21mm lug width and the fact that the top pusher tends to dig into my wrist. I get around this by wearing it on an MN strap which raises it just enough to solve the problem. Many complain about the oem bracelet, but I really don’t mind it at all. If you wanted to change the look, strapcode offers an oyster style bracelet specially designed for this watch.

I got my flightmaster for a steal at $120 on eBay with a scratched up handlex crystal. A cheap crystal press and replacement sapphire later, and the watch is good as new, maybe better, with this clear ar-coated sapphire crystal. That being said, I don’t trust the water resistance quite as much as I would if the crystal weren’t replaced.

What are your thoughts on the flightmaster? Would you pick this over the solar quartz chronograph speedtimers?

What’s your go to quartz watch?

That’s a beautiful watch you got there. My go to quartz is between my Tissot T-touch and my Swiss army watch. Both are great so it would be hard to choose a favorite

Sweet!

I watched these go from $250 before their popularity increased up to what they are now.

Following this one. I'm looking for an analog quartz. My Citizen Nighthawk looks good in the box but big on the wrist. Right now my answer would be Casio World Time.

Yeah I think TGV had some part to play in that…

Nice. I have my eye on the Arnie myself. It will probably be my next watch, I think ani-digi is cool

My quartz go to is my Bulova Lunar Pilot Panda. It's the perfect companion to my Speedy and because it's a HAQ, it's always ready to go and more accurate than any of my other watches.

Sure it's not the blue Snoopy Speedy but it ticks the Apollo, HAQ and Panda boxes for me and if I can't get off the Rolex wait list for a mass produced watch, forget about ever getting a watch so limited in production even if it is not a LE.

Those are some sweet watches. I love when one watch ticks of multiple boxes in my collection.

Casio Pathfinder PAG240T. ABC functions, world time, sunrise/sunset, and all your standard Casio goodness.

Image

For more formal occasions, the Bulova Precisionist. I've only set the time twice: when I first got it and this past daylight savings change. It hasn't gained or lost a second between those times.

Love it. Casios are just too practical to not have

I have several quartz watches. I rotate my collection daily so don't have a go to as such. Today I'm wearing the watch I've owned the longest (since about 1995). Wallace and Gromit for the win!

My go-to quartz is a G-Shock or this CWC.

·

It’s an unconventional grab and go watch, but I’m almost never submerged in water so it really makes no odds

Tissot Chrono Diver 200m

·

My Quartz go-to watch has got to be my Bulova Lunar Pilot followed closely by the Pagani Design Speedmaster homage. I have a Casio Duro Pepsi, but I don't wear it much

sorry for the crappy phone pic 😔

Love the Flight Master I need to own one. It depends on what I am doing but I have several quartz go to watches. For analog it's my Citizen Garrison for digital it's one of my G Shocks depending on which one grabs my attention when I open the watch box.

·

Completely agree. I might argue that even the flightmaster is a somewhat “plain” design, with the black and white dial and hits of yellow. Just because it’s complicated doesn’t make the design language not simple and straightforward. Compare this to some other chronographs, they have all kinds of colors and non symmetry going on. Idk maybe I’m wrong tho 😅

Nah you’re spot on. The navitimer is pretty simple. It’s just a lot because it’s a tool watch that I don’t understand because I’m a D35K pilot 😂

The lume.... its something else. It gives a psuedo always-on feel. It's like lume is active even in day time plus... its not as widespread as the panda speedtimer so that's a plus.
