Christopher Ward change order policies don't make sense, or do they?

So a month ago I ordered a blue dial CW Bel Canto on the bracelet. Deposited my $1,200 and sat back to patiently wait. In the intervening time, I rethought my dial color choice and sent them a note asking to change it to the Rosa (more of a brown/copper). Their (polite) response was that to simply change the color I'd have to cancel my order, get refunded, re-order the new color choice, and oh, by the way I lose my place in the queue resulting in extending the delivery date beyond the original November ETA. Now, I'm thinking that policy seems silly and unnecessary and maybe I'll just go a different direction and skip the Bel Canto--I like the Bel Canto, but there are way too many interesting watches and way too little time.... I'm curious what my fellow Crunchers think. Would you move on to a different watch or accept the two month longer wait? Let me be clear, this question isn't about the wait, per se. I'm not impatient to get a watch, but this policy and process just rankles me....

The policy is to ensure that they order the correct nu.ber of each dial variant. By changing colour you are changing the numbers per variant, meaning they don't have the correct numbers.

Put another way, how would you feel about a bunch of people ahead of you switching to your favored colour, so you get bumped back a few months from that?

Yes. Unfortunately - while it’s the same “line” - it’s not the same watch. It’s a different lot of watches. So while technically it’s still a Bel Canto it’s like you’re ordering a completely different watch.

If this post was about changing the type of strap. For instance from a leather strap to a bracelet (which I plan on doing), I would agree with you. But the dial is actually another completely different watch.

I would think of it like you're in a different line. What you want to do is now move to the Rosa line, and I'm sure you'd agree that you would have to join the back.

What is a faff, and perhaps unnecessary, is having to process a cancellation, refund, re-order.

·

It's not an unreasonable policy. In your mind, it's just the same watch with a different color. From a manufacturing standpoint, it's a completely different watch. Different batch, different production run.

They cannot simply move you from spot 10 to spot 10, there is already a dude in spot 10 and it's not fair to him or feasible to move everyone down. I'd be pretty furious if my spot in line got pushed backward because a company told me this other guy is more important than me because he ordered blue months ago.

·

If it’s made to order then essentially you’re asking them to give a Rosa dial allocated for someone else, to you.

It’s only fair they fulfil existing orders first and you join the back.

·

It’s normal process.

imagine you are in the line for blue, when it’s your turn suddenly some random dude cut your line and claim that he came from the front of yellow line. Will you be okay?

2 extra months is not that long, will be worth the wait!

·

They did same thing to me. I canceled and did not re order. I’ll just pick one up second hand when they start selling bellow resale eventually

·

If they move you to the other colour maintaining your delivery date, someone will receive an email saying “some dude took your place on the queue, so you’ll receive your watch on…”. That message will go for the last person in each batch for that colour. That’s not fair, is it?

Having to cancel your order and making a new order again… well, that could be made “behind the curtain” for you.

If you want that watch, you’ll hace to restart the process. But, you can always go for another one. But I would suggest not to take that decision because you don’t see the process fair, you’ll regret not having the watch in a while

·

In my opinion, it looks like they're being fair, given that by changing the color dial you're changing your slot in the queue, I'd try to contact some of the CW guys who are in the WC community and see if there is any exception or something else they can do for you.

Please don't be disappointed with the watch. It's a really nice one and I'm sure they'll help you out with this.

Edited to mention Mike and Patrick.

Seems like a reasonable policy.

·

Sounds to me like CW is starting to feel like they have the upper hand. Seriously?

·

Agree what others explained. The policy in place is also dependent on how the order management system or software works from order to production to delivery etc.

·

My take: It's a matter of skipping the line for a different watch (different dial). If the policy was such that my date was pushed back on my dial choice (perhaps many times) due to others' changing their mind, I'd think CW's procedure was unequivocally wrong.

·

Tell me you don't understand how businesses work without telling me.

Perfectly reasonable policy.

·

I totally agree with everybody’s statement. different line different time. Those are the brakes.

·

I design business processes for businesses. Their process was designed as such because in the past too many problems/errors occurred when they tried to skip steps. This is the best solutions for all parties.

Not just random dude!!! Me. I’m in line for a Rosa! 😂

·

I guess my take is that if you are thinking of moving on just because of this technicality, you really don’t have a great deal of interest in the watch in general. I would just move on to something you really do love, rather than just have a casual interest in.

Though an interesting ⌚, the Bel Canto is not worth the wait.

If you seek a ⌚ with sound, pay a bit more and consider the Vulcain Cricket.

Similarly, the +/-$4000 can find some nice new ⌚ on JomaShop.

Despite the innovation behind the Bel Canto, it only chimes once per hour, which makes the complication somewhat oversold - even if at $4000.

Alternatively, you could wait for a while to see if any pop up on the secondary market later for less.
