Happy to be here

Hi all, I just started collecting a little over a year ago and am having trouble with the pause button. Any advice on that will be welcomed. I am, right now as I write this, wearing a Longines VHP GMT. My interest are wide. I started sailing seven years ago, which is another great way to burn cash, if you are looking for another avenue. I live, work, and sail in Detroit.

I had the same problem. Now I'm starting to sell a few. And...welcome!

Welcome to the fast forward button!

But seriously, limiting watch media is probably the best way to hit that pause.

Well, either that or being broke.

Great to have you 'onboard', go with what you like.

Welcome. If you’re not already, it may help break the acquisition impulse to do more with the hobby than just acquire watches: You can service and mod and share the ones you have, or just make sure you’re wearing them all. Swap straps. Meet with other hobbyists online or IRL.

Of course, if you’re that far gone, it may he worth just stepping back and doing other meaningful things more often. No watch is worth compromising your peace of mind (I’m sure you’re familiar with the line about the two best days in a sailor’s life).

Welcome to WC. I wish I could help you with the pause button, but I'm afraid I'm, in the same boat (and I'm not even a sailor:-)).

Hi Brian! Fellow sailor here (boat is in the UK), so I known what you're going through... That hobby is a bottomless pit!

As for tips: wait. I am serious, just wait with buying! Store pictures of the watches you want in a folder on your phone or computer and take a look once in a while. You will notice that some models will keep staying appealing and others will fade away. I thought I liked a Rolex Submariner, imagine that! 😂 The models that are still appealing to you after some time are the ones you buy. But take your time!

Thanks, that's a smart and simple solution. My watch media consumption has shot up, so cooling that off will be helpful.

Thanks for your suggestions. Most helpful. I have recently become aware of the whole mod community. Super interesting! I have a bit of a machine shop in the basement, it would be a natural to move into moding/servicing.

And thanks too, for putting this all in perspective. Sometimes a momentary obsession can seem overwhelming. I'll just breathe through it :)

Thanks. Waiting/patience are great advice. I'm a big fan of a gantt chart......sort of. I make lists of next potential watches and how I value different qualities. It's helpful to look back at list's I put together just half a year ago. My goal for 2023 is to slow way down.

Sailing in the UK! Sounds exciting. Is most of your time on the ocean? Or are you on inland water?
