Thoughts on "Iced-out Watches"

Personally I hate Iced-out watches, I think they tend to look awful and doing it not only destroys the value but also defeats the purpose of the craftsmanship that went into it. As hyped as they are there is so much craftsmanship and detail that goes into a Nautilus. And then some rapper comes along and glues some crap gemstones to it.

Debate in the comments. 🙃

I'm also not a fan, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I suspect the people covering their watches in diamonds don't care about "resale value".

One of the coolest watches I have seen in a while is a Rolex that a guy had custom engraving done to.  It looked very cool, and the guy never intended to sell or trade it, so he didn't care about hurting the value.

I just find it so dumb especially on high horology watches, like drawing on a Van Gogh painting with some crayons. Engravings are a bit better although I wouldn't do that to anything expensive, and some Bamford modified watches aren't too bad. But Icing out is ruining the watch IMO.

Bear in mind that the people doing it like it, so wouldn't see it as diminishing from the watch at all.

If someone wants to buy Patek, VC, ALS, AP, etc.. and smash them to pieces with a hammer, have at it.

As I said, I agree they look worse than a stock watch, but it's not my watch, and not my money...

What about factory set ones? It is amazing how they do it

Not a fan. But if one desires it, do it factory set. Always.

Factory set is the only acceptable answer. But if someone wants to pay for their perfect version of timepiece jewelry, by essentially super-Seiko-modding the shit out of a classic, who am i to stop their style, all the power to them. I just want them to be aware of the destructive nature, sadly i don’t think this will happen much.

As far as how I think they look, to me they’re just so overtly decorated that they come full circle and share the same margin of madness as Invicta.

I'm sure there must be some iced out watches that I'd like, but I've yet to find one.

·

From my point of view, the value of a watch should be shown in the delicacy and attention to detail of its construction, not in precious stones. Watches are already a jewel in themselves, the perfect blend of art and engineering on a very small scale, with great attention to detail.

·

I mean I absolutely hate it. I think that it looks really cheap and tacky. But at the end of the day it's not my watch and not my money. Who am I to tell them not to?

·

Don’t like it, but if you gotta have it go factory or go home.   Also the rainbow daytona is still hawt…even if I don’t like ice or Daytonas lol

·

Diamonds are just lumps of coal that did well under pressure.

·

I don’t hate them, they just aren’t for me. but some people can rock them. 😁

·

I am a Hater!  Nothing, in my opinion, wrecks a watch quicker than putting diamonds all over it.

The geologist in me agrees.

The magpie in me blocked you out the minute it saw a shiny.

·

Not my style but if I wanted a watch covered in diamonds I'd rather have one modified than buy it that way. Much preferable to give my money to a local craftsman than a multinational organisation.

Only to profit off it...

Horrendous. Doesn't matter if it's factory set or not. They always look awful.
