AP did *NOT* steal their design language from Movement Watches!!

Just wanted to write a quick post to head off the inevitable criticism that AP's latest chronograph release is knocking off Movement Watches.

Even though these dials might appear similar - they are not! A close examination will reveal different shades of black, and also, note, no hour markers on the AP, nor sub-dial depressions. Thus, AP puts the amateur, Alibaba minimalism of Movement Watches to shame.

So please, no need for petty comments. Thank you.

😂😆🤣😋🤓

P.S. In all seriousness, for some inexplicable reason, I actually like the AP release!

I suspect you like it for the same reasons others like MVMT, it's a nice look.

Doesn't hurt that it's an AP either... 😉

Definitely doesn't hurt. 🤤

I have the feeling AP is increasingly becoming a bit of a joke. Their watches aren’t desirable, they’re just coveted because the next sucker will pay 50% more of whatever that monstrosity cost.

·

That is the waste of a complication, its like making a GMT without the hand! Lol

Waiting for the inevitable infringement lawsuit from Movement! 🤣

The basic RO is a lovely watch. The dials are gorgeous and the bracelet and case finishing is beautiful. The movement finishing isn't spectacular (for the price), but still nice. When I started getting into the hobby, you can buy a used Royal Oak for 15k. At that price, they were incredible.

But yeah, many of their recent releases are...uninspiring.

I'm so glad this isn't true. My heart can't take any more crazy watch industry news this week.

They're teaming up against Daniel Wellington.

What version?

·

Without any minute/hour markers, that is quite a useless watch for me. 😄

Then again, i guess if you have money to throw away at this, you probably dont care about the time 😁

·

Is it a collab with a designer brand? I wonder, it's not on APs website, but on some shop selling clothes.

Apparently you should use the watch as a keychain

Exactly - you have to wonder why the RO is still going, and it’s because it is (in essence) a good watch. It sells well for AP - they are a business, and this is how they make their money.

Right - can we all just take a step back.

It’s a collaboration.

It’s a collaboration with 1017 ALYX 9SM. If you consider the design language of the brand, it’s pretty much in line with their product. The brand is very much what you expect, similar to other fashion brands of similar origin and price.

If you don’t like it, fine, walk on. Let’s not be silly. How many of us are the desired audience - probably none. This can exist, and I am happy it does - I like the fact that it breaks the utility of the chronograph as a function, it’s both ironic in terms of style over substance which a high end watch is at the end of the day, and the fact that a brand wants to charge £300 for a short sleeve hi-vis shirt. It’s fashion that’s aware of its irony and people buy it… we are doomed as a species.

It sure is. It was a dumb idea on the MVMT and it's a dumb idea here, I don't care that the watch costs about 3500 times more.

My new SpagScam arrived on time, the chapter ring was aligned, there was no dirt on the dial, and the second hand hit all the marks perfectly. I thought they were supposed to offer superior quality control because they eliminated the middleman. Then I looked in the box and couldn't find any middleman parts. This was the last straw. You can't count on anything nowadays. I sent it back.

It actually seems 3500 times dumber. I feel that MVMT is designed to fleece non watch guys out of their money, but I would expect more from AP; seems like a Hublot move to me lol. I speak as someone who bought a Fossil Chronograph with a tachymeter and a non-chronograph center seconds hand lol 😂

"It actually seems 3500 times dumber." Haha, that's great! Years ago I had a Fossil "skeleton" watch which wasn't a skeleton at all. It had artwork on the dial that looked liked watch springs and gears, and then a little slit revealing the movement's coil (it was a quartz watch). Then it had a fat hour hand with FOSSIL printed on it. It was actually a very sharp watch. I might buy it again if they still made it.

And it made 3500 times more sense than that AP thing. I feel like I'm 3500 times dumber for having seen it.

Here is what I say about the whole design stealing. I think at the end of the day all the brands big or small borrow, or copy designs some being a 1 for 1 if we are talking “homage” or what ever you want to call it. But honestly we shouldn’t care where anyone got it from at this point. Clearly it isn’t illegal for them to do it so we should stop protesting it amongst our self.

Now say that’s what your post is doing I just personally don’t like ANYTHING that causes divide lines between enthusiasts for what every reason. I like when we all hold hands and sing combiya ✌️😉
