Trying on Longines and Tissot PRX 35

First off, apologies for the photos - lighting is horrible in the boutique.

Longines Master Small Seconds:

Probably my favourite. Lovely size and a really unque dial. Anthracite with a hint of brown on the textured dial but its the rose gold engraved indices which are stunning. The reflections you get as you roll your wrist is just beautiful to look at. Comes with a polished deployant buckle.

Longines Heritage Flagship Moonphase:

I wanted to see the cream dial (with gold indices) but they only had the white (and blue) in. Straight on, it looks similar to the JLC Ultra Thin Moon but for me, this watch loses all its elegance from being too thick (it may look different on your wrist). The Moonphase is approx £600 more than the small seconds. The strap felt nicer on the Moonphase and comes with a tang buckle.

Tissot PRX 35

Always liked the 35mm size. This white dial has a mother of pearl sheen to it. It really feels like an Oysterquartz. The waffle pattern adds a lot more interest. The tapered bracelet is light and just looks awesome on a wrist roll. I’m waiting to see the gold version (8 weeks).

That small seconds one is 🔥🔥🔥

That small seconds is really eye-catching, even in the pictures the colour looks amazing.

·

First time seeing that small seconds, such a stunning piece 🔥

It is. A real dress watch size and really different to most things on the market

·

I like the engraved numerals more every time I see them.👍

·

Anthracite dial for the win👍

I should have taken pictures of the salmon and the white dials too

The salmon is really terrific. Love it if Longines could use that dial color in a chronograph.

·

3 gorgeous watches, but the master small seconds takes the win for me. A stunner (not my style but I appreciate the form) longines are certainly putting out some beautiful watches lately.

I agree, Rob. It’s quite refreshing to a big brand try something different. Especially a ‘heritage’ brand like Longines who could mine their back catalogue for re-issues. Working with price constraints too. Obviously there’s still a lot of tat in their lineup but you certainly couldn’t accuse them of resting on their laurels or relying on one killer model.

I know what you mean about ‘not for me’ watches (mine is Panerai - just too big). Just because we don’t wear them, we can still love their look, what they stand for, what they do, how they’re made etc

·

You really can’t go wong with any of these choices Chung. It’s funny because I’m currently right now in the phase of looking at Longines and tissot. I already have the PRX Auto in blue dial though. I wanted my next watch to be luxury entry and Longines is the best place to start from what I understand.

Thanks - I just really wanted to see them. Pictures and press releases can look great but until you try them on, hold them or see them - you never quite know. Is your PRX auto in the 40mm? That watch could just be worn in any scenario.

Any particular Longines models that have caught your attention? I have the Spirit in 37mm and that’s a very versatile piece and it comes in a few dial colours/size and complication variations

Totally agree, it is nice to see a big brand like longines bringing fresh models to the market, and they are certainly going all in with that form of dial texture. Just been looking at the new hydroconquest gmt and it's a 'wow' from me.

·

Am I the only one who thinks that moonphase is just beautiful!

If only it was just a mill or two thinner... and £600 cheaper. I can see how it would be hard to justify that price... but it's still lovely.

Looking forward to seeing the gold prx!

·

Yeah that small seconds kinda knocks it out the park. Looks great on your wrist too.

·

Nice pics! Yup, the blue Longines is a clear winner 🏆

In the pictures - I didn’t like the blue Moonphase but in person - it’s really nice. It borders on a midnight shade

The BB54 is going to be on a lot of people’s list (me included).

The Longines Silver Arrow had a great case size and interesting dial but suffered from long lugs imo.

That’s exactly why I didn’t get a Silver Arrow was the long lugs absolutely spot on assessment. :)

·
ChippewaCraig

I really like that moon phase.

Gives you a reason to stop by the Longines AD next time 😉

We can’t be the only ones that think this! Proportionally its off but maybe they’re making it for people with bigger wrists who want a smaller sized watch. The longer lugs will make the transition easier for them.

If I am going long lugs I will do it on one of these (fellow cruncher pic)

Well spotted! I would normally agree with you (especially as the ‘5’ has avoided ‘execution’!) but the engraved numerals are exceptional.

All 3 are very nice in their own way and well produced watches imo - can’t really go wrong

Image

Design wise it could take cue from the Nomos Club 36 Im wearing where the small seconds are, well smaller. Honestly Nomos could have simply used all numerals but they would have issues with the number 6 as well.

Nice watch!

It’s a design ‘problem’ with small seconds dials in general, isn’t it?

I don’t think I’d want to lose the engraved Breguet numerals on the Longines though - even if it means cutting off the ‘7’ and omitting the ‘6’.

·

Its all good. The Breguet numerals really makes this Longines stand out.

·
Faz2.0

I can't get over that 7 being cut off like that on the Longines small seconds. But yeah that's just me. Longines always has a way with moonphase dials which I've always admired though. So for me it'd either be the Longines moonphase or the PRX.

😂 I thought it was only me that hated ‘eaten’ numerals. It instantly disqualifies a watch for me, since it’s all I see.

·

The small seconds is on another level. The moonphase looks great but looks a bit thick from the side profile.

Yeah, I think the Moonphase needs at least a 1.5mm taken off the height. Maybe it’s because I’m (unfairly) comparing it to the JLC ultra thin moon. I think it can definitely be achieved by changing the lug shape and lowering them a little

·

At first, I did not like the Longines Master Small Seconds but it was growing on me quickly. The engraved dial with Breget numberings is very nice. There was another aspect to the watch that I love but it has not been mentioned so far.

The ring around the dial has small and large dots. The large dots are polished and they sparkle so much under the lights at the store. They give a short burst of lights just like diamonds. In fact, I did ask the salesperson if the larger dots were diamonds and the answer was no.

I must admit I didn’t notice these - Thanks for the excuse of going back to the AD…😉

It’s a fight between the Longines, I like the small seconds and the Moonphase for cool different looks. Tissot in 3rd on this one, I’m afraid.
