Moon-face

The moonphase complication (however useless it may be) just adds so much to a dial imo. It may be a pain to set too but so many reviewers mention the word ‘romance’ when a moonphase is present. The bonus for me is when the manufacturer adds a ‘face’ onto it. Others prefer to make the moon as detailed as possible, while some just have a disc. The differently shaped (and sized) apertures which detail the moon also play a part in the design too. Anyone else a fan? And which do you prefer - face or no face? The moonphase indicator above, is from my Pierce Triple Calendar.

A smiley moon face always tickles my fancies … 🍻 as much I would like to have the CW moon phase watch I cannot unsee two balls glowing… thanks to my wife 🤯😖😜😂

It's the best complication. And it's sexy AF.

Love this. Crescent shaped date indicator as well as the stars on the moonphase on a Speedy - so cool! You can’t get more ‘Moon’ than that😂😂😂

·

I don't have a Moonphase watch (yet 😱). That being said they look great and I would prefer one with a face. Good post.

They all look great - I’d never turn down a Lange 1 Moonphase, for example! A slight variation with the day/night background behind the moonphase!

That Christopher Ward Moonglow or whatever with the photorealistic luminous moon is a neat trick but I generally want these to look all Phileas Fogg and have as much Victorian whimsy as allowed by law.

I’ve always had a soft spot for those sun/moon complications with the borderline mediaeval artwork — the new age nineties kind of styling, straight off a Tarot card. They turn up on ladies watches (the ones that obviously are not designed with unisex fashion in mind) more often than anything else, and mainly on white dials.

·

As realistic as possible for me

I think modern day manufacturing techniques mean that realistic look is easier to produce now. Even though a moonphase is a complication associated with older watches, it’s nice to see today’s brands come up with different (and stunning) designs like these

Any particular models catch your eye?

I have a Baume & Mercier grey dial Moonphase on order, tell you the truth I have not examined one yet but B&M is under rated. I do not believe I will be disappointed with the watch. Montblanc as well as Longines have a few in their catalogue. The complication has become passe with modern enthusiasts.

Is that the Clifton? In steel or RG?

It adds the radial date on the moonphase sub-dial (imo that really elevates the look). Longines’ new Flagship Heirtage Moonphase also has the same design - it suits me a little better at 38.5mm (but I’ve not tried it on)

Hi,

I think the Clifton was older, this is based on the Baumatic movement. As I said I have not actually examined one yet, it is a larger case, Longines will be a trimmer fit. The blue iteration was sold but I prefer the grey. According to my ad there is only one left in Canada, not a great seller. He wears the Omega, speedy Moonphase in blue.

·

I like both of course. The moonphase complication is useful to mariners and other professions where the moon does cause change, like for example tides.

·

I decided to look at the B&M site, seems there is another Clifton Moonphase iteration that does not have the days of the week indicator on the top of the dial. I am going for the busier looking dial which is what caught my attention in the first place.

I never looked at their watches until recently. Nice collection for a solid price.

There is that. I can see a moonphase having some benefit if the wearer lives in close proximity to a woman (or women) in a certain age range and uses the moonphase as a kind on early-warning system.

·

I don't have one, However I've always wanted one.

I yearned for a moonphase for a long time. Yes, it’s not helpful to my life but I absolutely love it! After months of debating, I got the JLC moonphase.

Congratulations - a very very nice looking watch!

When I tried it on, I couldnt believe how thin it was - although prices have really crept up on this one!

I was obsessed with them in the mid 1980s when I was a kid.

Weirdly, I've never bought one as an adult. I don't dislike them; just not obsessed any more.

Our tastes change (as we do) for a variety of reasons.

Where did you encounter them? Family? Friends? Books? Shops?

I would see them in shopping malls, in the windows of high-end jewelers.

Even as a kid, who didn't wear a watch half the time, I've always loved looking at watches.

·

I don't have a strong opinion either way but the only moonphase I own doesn't have one. I don't really wear this watch much but it's actually rather lovely... the crystal is one of the best I've seen...

Ah I see. It does make a difference being exposed (whether you see them or wear them) to things. Like the Apple Watch will bring in more people into watches in 10, 20, 30 years time. They will already be ‘wrist-literate’.

That’s a rather precise moonphase indicator! I’ve not seen that very often (not that I’m an expert!). Truth be told - the moonphase is hardly ever ‘correct’ on mine - I just like to see Moon-Man smiling back at me! If it were upto me, I’d have have him do the ‘finger guns’ too 😂

I’m in the stylized camp, i.e. JLC or GO:

Longines Master Collection Moonphase. The intricate details on the dial are impressive.

I think this needed a third choice of “it depends”. There are some watches I prefer it without the face. At the same time, there are some watches where I love the face on the moon. I went with “no” as I think I tend to prefer without a face but there are definitely some with the face on the moon that I like. 🤙🏼
