I love this question. For me, this is something I’ve been wrestling with ever since I got into collecting. I don’t have a perfect answer, so I’ll totally contradict myself here but:
1) I do think there is a bit of justification for spending so much on a material object that we want it to mean something. Call it virtue signaling.
2) I believe it is very rare to a)be into watches and b) to have a significant family member pass down a meaningful watch to you. When it happens, it’s real. I hope to be that family member to my kids.
