Merkur

I love what Merkur is doing in the budget sector. Nothing wrong with the build, especially at the price. I have four of them, now.

What a beautiful piece, I didn't even know this brand existed!

·

Just checked the brand out and, they’re definitely doing some really cool stuff I marked a few for later.

·

Trying not to buy anything for now, but I keep coming back to that salmon dial…

·

I thought maybe we were covering safety razors here.

·

Have seen that salmon dial Pierre Paulin before, but had never heard of Merkur (since the last time I saw an XR4ti on the road, anyway 😉). They do look like neat watches. Do you think the high end of their price range is good stuff too (they top out at over $1000USD)?

·

I bet it looks better IRL, looks like I am going to buy one.

·

Merkur, Hroudland, Proxima, and San martin, just to name a few. Watch snobs may hate them, but the reality is that they make excellent watches for very reasonable prices. ENJOY

·

Clean!! The dial looks awesome.

·

Beautiful watch. Escapement Time is a great budget brand, too.

·

Ow I love this timepiece, specially the salmon dial. I already saw 2 different shades of salmon, one more pink (better) and this one more yellow.

·

Which movement they are using?

·

I like mine. Getting one was some of the best advice of 2022.

·

A very nice looking piece right there! Thanks for the link, going to check out some of their offerings.

·

Vary nice!! They have some good looking watches, love the rose dial.

Which movement they are using?

It's a variant of the Chinese tongji or standard movement, but subject to Merkur's adaptations and QC.

It looks better than that photo, for sure. :-) Here's another from another shoot...

The more Merkur explores the guochao style, the more I like them. I've picked up two and at absurdly low prices. https://www.thetimebum.com/2022/01/merkur-304-pilot.html

I have two of the pilot versions, myself. The black dial...

...and the green (which I think has better hand proportions because the blue/green lume framing on the hands doesn't show up well on the black dial version). But I like both.

You mentioned you weren't sure about the design since it doesn't look like Chinese air force 304 watches, and you're correct. It doesn't--but it does very much reflect the 30x (military) dials on  Chinese manufactured aircraft clocks of that era.

Agreed. The blue/green is just a touch too dark, but I do love the overall design.

Which movement they are using?

They use the Seagull mechanical or automatic movements I think. They tweak the movements to improve certain known issues with them. Check the website https://www.merkurwatch.com/

Me too, and it still works well. I snapped up the black dial first, as soon as I saw it.

Love the stamped "304" in the dial. BTW, I'm glad you posted that cockpit clock pic. It all makes sense now.

From http://www.eastwatchreview.com/blog/2015/10/20/a-historical-perspective-chinas-first-chronograph

"Project Codes

All Chinese military time-keeping equipment was assigned certain product serial numbers in order to maintain order, as well as confidentiality.

At the time, there were a total of 6 categories, with 210 varieties of military time-keeping equipment being developed and produced for the national defense industry.

Each product of time-keeping equipment that was trial manufactured in the year 1962 was coded, and each variety of products was given its own coding category.

For example, the prefix code of products for the navy and shipbuilding industry was One, so various types of nautical and astronomical mechanical clocks fell under the project code of 101.

Likewise, the prefix code of products for the army and weapons industry was Two, with the product code 201 specifying mechanical clocks to be used in Chinese military tanks.

The prefix code of products for the air force and aviation was Three. Mechanical clocks used in aviation were coded 301. And finally, 304 was the code given to watches created for Chinese Air Force personnel."

Cool, since I don’t wear suits, only for rare occasions, I need an affordable dress watch so I can put it on when I wear a suit, I think this will be gorgeous with a leather strap

I was tempted to get this one, even had it in the cart, but just wasn't enough to make me buy it and ignore the fact that I have too many watches already.
