Why GS?

Hi everyone! I have been here since September 2022 (needed to get away from toxicity of certain watch forums, felt in love with this community and decided to stay here).

I must admit that since my early days of collecting watches back in the 2000s I did not pay much attention (close to zero) to it. I have some Seikos (and other Japanese brands like Citizen and Casio). I know that it is a good brand of course, as a self-proclaimed watch-enthusiast, I have came across several GS but it just never caught my attention maybe it was my ignorance.

Since joining CW one thing I notice here is that I see that there's a lot of love for GS. Everyday in WRUW and other thread there will always be people talking about GS. That's when I started to look it up, still since living in Switzerland it's pretty hard to find GS so I only have the internet. But it was not until our fellow cruncher, @angelos posted his SBGE275 and I was like OMFG that's beautiful AF! I still havn't bought one though, but that's how my interest for GS really kickstarted.

So I want to know about the brand, not the history but the watch. Why and how did you come about GS? Also the (favourite) model(s) you own and why? 🙂

Maybe you could recommend me ? 😄 I don't like clean-dress watches, more towards to the fun/active side.

Have a nice day!

I think the value prop accounts for a lot of the love: the level of craftsmanship, fit and finish is on par or greater than watches several times more expensive. GS are genuine innovators too with the Spring Drive and incredible quartz movements (read up on those if you're unaware).

Thank you very much for referencing me @Adiplin !

My story is that I had a watch or two before and then I saw in the news (I think it was in fratellowatches.com) I saw the press release for SBGP017, the "Sea of Clouds" and it was a love at first sight (the second one after my wife).

I was captured by the craftsmanship, the overall thought put in every detail and its "high-techniness" you see in every GS piece, and even more in the Quartzs and Spring Drives.

The price compared to similar specked pieces is also a bargain, nobody gives you more value for your money than GS.

Finally, you don't get the same shit as some other manufacturers of the country you are living, where you need to beg to give your money. The overall buying affair with GS is much more dignified and respectable for the customer.

You get also many models and multiple releases per year that can satisfied every taste and use case.

Hope it helps to understand at least my line of thinking.

I used to own Rolex, Omega, and Breitling. Because this is who I thought I was...

But, it turns out, this is who I am, really, deep down inside...

GS fits my lifestyle perfectly. I couldn't be happier.

Thanks!

yes I am quite aware of their Spring Drive innovation. I think that spring drive is a game changer in the industries, and it kinda proves that Japan has actually caught up if not better the Swiss in term of accuracy.

I think it was the design or my tad ignorance thinking that a good watch must be Swiss Made

Thank you for the lovely story 🙂

Prior to this whenever I think of luxury watches, it's always Swiss-Made. GS has never crossed my brain, but now I will add GS to my buy-must list!

I actually got the SBGH005 and the SLGA007 at the same time! A bit overboard on my part. Ha!

I have a very similar experience of what you mentioned in my watch collecting journey. I was always more drawn to watches that has more function (tool watch), but as I age, I started to appreciate the simple & clean dress watch. I’ve been reading about Grand Seiko for over 15 years and my inner demon never screamed for one until recently. I think the main reason why I have fell in love with GS is that I no longer cared about what others see on my wrist anymore, it is me who knows, appreciate and enjoys the craftsmanship of GS, and for that I appreciate GS for existing, and I’m excited seeing GS is gaining attention and success globally.

The more I grow, the more I realize that I am that pillow man. It is cool to dream and think we are the main characters in our lives, but there is so much peace in recognizing that we may be background characters. It is much less exhausting

I’m rockinga SBGN003 but it’s a Quartz (a damn good one at that, having lost only 1 second in half a year until I had to set it to DST).

I love the look, quality and wear of the watch.

Anything above that price tag, though, is a bit out of reach (I couldn’t justify it to myself, tbh, let alone the wife – YOU know what I’m talking about 😅).
