New Watch / Noisy Movement - Possible Fix?

Hey All!,

Just got my first automatic watch - a Farer Resolute - and absolutely loving it. The movement, a La Joux-Perret G101, however seems super loud. If I move my arm a bit fast, I can heart it loudly spinning away. I was wondering if that's normal or if I can/should take it to a spot that can maybe help lessen the noise. Thanks!

UPDATE: Woah!! Thanks to a chat with @WaPhoto I changed out the straps with some ones from Delugs. Not only does the watch sit waaaay better on my wrist, but because it does so, it really helps to suppress the noise from the rotor. Thanks, all!! This community really is great.

Isn't the G101 based on the Miyota 9015? If so, I would consider it normal.

As hbein2022 said, it looks like a similar design (very close!) to miyota: https://calibercorner.com/la-joux-perret-caliber-ljp-g101/

Wow, you learn something everyday.

I have a Zelos Spearfish with the LJP G100 Soigné movement, and the rotor does tend to be quite noticably loud. A quick sudden movement of the wrist can easily result in the rotor spinning with a noticeable whirr for a couple of seconds.

Interesting/good to know! If that's the case am I right in assuming no way to help quiet it a bit down?

Well good to know I'm not the only one!

I also got a Resolute from this latest batch and can confirm it’s got a somewhat loud rotor. I’ve seen some comments about the rotor noise on some forums and in YT comments so it didn’t come as a surprise. Definitely pretty funny when I shake out a towel or something when folding laundry and I get a WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRR sound coming from my wrist lol

Otherwise how are you enjoying the resolute?

Am I the only one questioning why it seems acceptable that a $1,000 watch has a noisy rotor? Seriously? This is acceptable?

Agreed. It's definitely a bummer. This being my first "expensive" watch, i wish something like this could've been locked down more.

That's exactly it! Just minding my business, move my arm a bit fast and then "WHHHHIIIRRR." Other than this, I'm really loving it. Have you thought about reaching out to Farer about it? I'm wondering if there's anything they can do on their end.

Do you think it's something the company could actually take care of?

Nah, I’m not sure what Farer could do aside from replace the movement with another manufacturer.

It’s known to be a noisy movement and even with that I’d still much rather have the LJP over say, the Sellita SW200 or any of the Seiko movements. The movement seems much more high end than the usual out of house options and I really appreciate the nearly 70 hours of PR while still maintaining 4 beats per second. Tissot achieves a similar PR by slowing the movement down to 3 HZ and the second sweep just isn’t as nice.

Yeah, that's kinda what I expected.

And agreed. Despite the noise, I love the PR, the smooth sweep and the accuracy - which has been fantastic. It's also finished way better than I even expected.

I have a JLC ultra thin in which the rotar is loud as fudge. I still love it.

Agreed on all fronts! The strap was awful but aside from that I’m over the moon with the watch

Nothing you can really do. It’s also not an indicator of quality, as the rotors on some higher end watches (older Omega Speedmasters in particular) can be quite noisy. I had a grand seiko spring drive automatic winder that I sold because, among other reasons, the rotor was noisy. It’s only something you can find out in person, which taught me that it’s important to handle watches in person before buying, or otherwise be okay with the rotor being a bit noisy on automatics.

Normal for that movement.

Because it’s a result of the inherent design of the movement. Not representative of the quality.

·

Being that it’s a Miyota (Citizen owns both Miyota and LaJouxPerret and that movement is a Miyota that undergoes final assembly and finishing in Switzerland by LJP so it can be marketed as “Swiss made” under the intentionally squishy laws there) it has a unidirectional winding rotor, which gives it that distinct whirring sound and “wobble” on wrist. It’s a good movement but that’s a normal characteristic of it and not a defect.

you may be happy to know that even pateks have rotor rattle ( nautili, calatravas ect)! Sometimes its part of the character of the movement.
