Watch company advertising Straplines

I love the Patek Philippe tag line:

You never really own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.

And then

Start your own tradition.

Smart. Well crafted. Hints at the I inter-generational value of a sizeable investment. And we all have “that” watch that we received as an inheritance or though the passing of a loved one. So make it a PP and make your PP unique to you and your family.

Nice.

Which brings me to Vacheron Constantin.

And WHAT on earth does this strap line say????

One of not many.

Eh?

So it’s not unique. Ok got it. There are others. But not lots of others. And that’s it… what else do you take away from this.

Its lazy writing and sends a message that I believe is completely counter to the value of the time piece, and exactly what the PP tag line so beautifully captures - that the watch is unique because of its owner.

A fail by VC in my view.

Disagree with me below. ;-)

Two of my favourite unrelated companies both have used the line "Go your own way" (Omega watches and Triumph motorcycles) 😉👍🏻

And I like that for both of them.

I cannot disagree. I dislike watch companies tag lines, as by and large they are made up by well paid advertising people and although they may have a hint of truth they are at the end of the day aspirational quotes to make you happy about your purchase. Of course not just watch companies do this, cars are the main culprits but everyone at it. I would like a quote to say "very expensive but well made" or " a fictional spy wears one and looks cool"

·

Yeah, then Triumph released a watch in partnership with Breitling 🤯🤣

Something must have been lost in translation. Either way, they should sack the marketing department!

Another one which I think sounds a little awkward is on the front of the Laco website: "Time for Legends". Maybe it's just me, but I can't get out of my head when someone says: "The guy's a legend"; and you reply, "Yes, he's a total Leg-end".

Interesting take that it’s a translation! It may well be

·

No disagreement here either. It’s too simplistic; I even checked the French website in order to check whether in their own language VC came up with something better than the childlike ‘not many’. Nope. Even while the rest of the text is all in French, the tagline remains ‘one of not many’.

Pity, cuz I like VC best of the so-called ‘trinity’. Taking a cue from 1990 movie Crazy People / truth marketing:

VOLVO — THEY’RE BOXY BUT THEY’RE GOOD.

UNITED — MOST OF OUR PASSENGERS GET THERE ALIVE.

METAMUCIL — IT MAKES YOU GO TO THE TOILET.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN - WATCH NERDS WILL ENVY YOU

Other suggestions welcome! I’m sure VC employees if not the marketing director troll these pages too :)

Actually, it seems to be the English which is the original:

Apparently, "One of not many" is a concept. Who knew.

I think they are "poking fun" at themselves. Self depricating comedy. You gotta' admit, it's a pretty funny saying. 😂

I’d kinda appreciate that if it wasn’t such a very expensive brand!

·

Fair, but isn’t that what all the ultra high end brands are SELLING? Entitlement. A sense that the thing on your wrist exudes a certain reflected glory that enables you walk a little taller? “One of not many” doesn’t do that for me…

·

One of not many, is a rather charming self-depricating English phrase - by contrast the Patek catchphrase to English ears sounds rather pompous and grandiose.

Now, of course, back in the 50's 60's and early 70's, for Vacheron there were never more than a couple of dozen identical combinations of case shapes, case materials and dial effects - the chance of you bumping into another person with the identical VC was pretty much zero. So the whole concept of going into the boutique and asking for the rather inevitable blue dial Overseas and getting on a wait list for yet another of the same watch just wasn't a thing. Aside from that there were numerous one off type pieces available to order or bespoke, so the phrase held true. I'm a VC lover and have at least one unique piece, but it doesn't quite sit perfectly with the way they make watches today.

But at least it isn't as quite as pretentious as the Patek slogan, so there's that. I shudder to know if there's an AP equivalent that buys into their ultra nouveau-riche vibes.

·

Few would sound better. "Not many" sounds evasive.

VC | For your inner VC

I once passed by a small diner with a slogan under the name saying:

“A Place to Eat.”

I was like “whhaaat?!” McDonald’s is a place to eat. Chili’s is a place to eat. My KITCHEN is a place to eat. Why on earth would you have such a lazy slogan? It doesn’t excite me to try your place out. I’m expecting mediocre food and mediocre service. God I could go on and on …..

Anyway the VC slogan reminds me of that. 😂

·
PoorMansRolex

Surely they just did this because some Boomer ad exec wanted to use the Fleetwood Mac song in an ad, right?

Meanwhile...

Would you say there are a plethora of VC watches?

Using popular older music in ads is the current pharmaceutical companies M.O.

·
Pallet_Fork

They probably did that for humor. There's a place in Nags Head, NC, that has "Eat and Get the Hell Out" on the side. 😂

True. I like that one better though lol.

·

@WatchBee beat me to it. My first instinct is it’s from an idiom in another language that doesn’t translate well.

·

·

I would change it to “one among a few” or “first of a few” but well c’est la vie

Aww, I wanna eat there and then get the hell out. We do have a restaurant close to here that throws the rolls at you across the room.

Hmmm. Maybe one of the pidgin English taglines? Kinda like how some people tattoo like ridiculously funny Chinese characters on their bodies without knowing.

My understanding is that French intellectual went through an anglophile period. Maybe this is one of the leftover of that? Because the way they explaining it makes sense. But a normal English speaker would say something like "one of the few" rather than "one of the not many."

Weird that they don't fix it...

You never really own a Patek , the bank and the watch own you …. Still…..love the pricey buggers …

Fried chicken 炸雞 😂 tattooed on the back of this chick’s neck at the airport coming back from Thailand, the tattooist obviously had a wicked sense of humour.

Love the VC tagline. Much better than the cliche PP one. “One of not many” implies it’s not unique but it’s also rare :). VC has a great motto too “Do better if possible, and that is always possible.”

The PP one is such BS and it’s just people trying to justify an expensive watch purchase IMO.

·

For me (not native speaker) it sounds like: you belong to the elite.

That would be appropriate.

I still won't buy a watch from VC... 😇

Meanwhile, Seiko's tagline: i see nothing wrong here

The café at John Lewis (a department store in the UK) is literally called "The place to eat"! At least it's honest about what it is, and it doesn't give you false expectations about what you'll get there (it's just a café with industrial food at the end of the day)... 😜

See that’s not as bad because they’re saying “THE place to eat!” Like this is it. You have found the only place you need to eat (assumingly) delicious food. Contrasted by “A place to eat” Just another place to eat. 😂

Actually you're right, it does make a huge difference! Every time my wife asks me where we should go to grab a coffee and I reply "the place to eat", it sort of sounds like "where else could we go anyway, that's the only place for this sort of things".
