Time piece is the proper term you’re referring to. I use the term sparingly but I do say it.
Our world (and the States especially) has boiled everything down to the most basic vocabulary possible. There is almost a hatred nowadays for all but the most casual of words and phrases.
I think the term “time piece” or even “wrist watch” has succumed to the same fate.
My understanding is that you can’t overwind a modern automatic watch. It basically has something analogous to a clutch that disengages when the mainspring is fully wound.
I have had a crush on Vacheron Historique American 1921 for some time now. It’s a few years out of reach. But aspirational nonetheless.
