How to pick the wristwatch dial color?

Dear WatchCrunch aficionados, I must confess that in the last weeks I became obsessed with wristwatches and decided to enlarge my current collection: Tissot Gentleman with black dial and Oris Big Crown Pointer Date with blue dial. The intention is to add a new timepiece: a simple versatile timeless classic design that could be used daily and in a variety of different settings. Among the shortlisted is the Longines 37mm with stainless steel bracelet that comes in different dial colors. Personality, taste, preference, fashion, complications all play important aspects in the selection process… 1. Which dial color do you think has the best impact, recognition, and most prestige? 2. And what tips would you give to select the dial color?

My advice is to throw impact, recognition, and prestige out the window and pick the one you like.

There is no answer to the first question in my mind. And for the second, choose which colour dial best complements the way you would wear that watch. For a versatile watch you can’t beat black.

  1.  Depends on the audience. In a crowd that loves "tool" watches none of those dials will impress. In a crowd of Patek owners, Longines won't be treated as "prestigious".
  2.  I'd pick the blue because it looks the most dynamic, and is also extremely versatile.

It's unlikely any of those colours would require careful consideration of wardrobe. If you were looking at a red or orange dial then maybe, but all those colours go with most things.

So I'd go with what you like and also consider what you already have.

My vote was for silver to add to the variety of your collection.

  1.  Most people don’t care what watch you wear so I don’t pay any attention to this question and feel it could lead to some buyer’s remorse if you buy a watch just for prestige and no one pays any attention.

  2. This is quite subjective. I like the blue most but could not tell you why. These days I try to make sure I have a bit of variety in my watches and otherwise just buy what I like.

I like and voted for blue, good looking and easy to read. However, I own & enjoy all of the dial colors. Get what you like!

I'd vote light but the champagne is lackluster at both contrast and complementing the case color.

Black is just empty and only a classy color for the wrong sort of people. In this case, blue it is. Luckily it is clearly the best looking of the three.

I've just got the Longines Conquest VHP in blue and I love it. It has a beautiful face and certainly goes with anything you want it to, whether formal, casual or sporty. My experience has been that people do know about Longines.

As others have said (and always do) 'you must choose what you like'. Hopefully no one buys what they don't like!

Perhaps before you decide, look at some other colours too. I enjoy my burgundy face and strap Victorinox INOX, which I also have in blue. I also like my orange Seiko 5.

I feel that you should always buy based on what appeals to you, not on what appeals to others. In terms of selecting which of those 3 to choose, I'd suggest going with whichever one brings the biggest smile to your face when you glance down and see it on your wrist. They are all versatile, although the blue dial may be the least so. The silver (champagne) dial is striking, but lacks contrast between the dial and hands. I have an OP36 with a similar silver dial and I love the look of the watch, but don't wear it as often as I might if it were easier to read the time without needing to get the angle of the light just right. Best of luck in your decision, and welcome to WC.

Go look at all 3 colour variants in person and choose the one you like most. Sometimes it really is that simple! 🍻

·

Here’s an odd idea (and just humour me for one second): pick the one that you like best, it’s your wrist.

·

First of all, great choice!

It's very personal, go for the one you like, for versatility I'd go for black since it's the most understated one and goes with most outfits, but that's me, either choice is good and up to you, can't go wrong with the spirit.

I would say they all look great. if you are just getting into watches, pace yourself with how many you acquire and how quick. You’ll never get to enjoy any of them if you acquire new ones so quickly.

Just follow this advice. I voted on my personal favorite. That doesn’t mean your favorite is wrong or worse in any way.

For me the most refined is the champagne dial without a doubt, and still very versatile. The black one is more of a sleeper and the blue somewhere in the middle
