Anyone else has trouble selling their watches?

I'm not talking about your Rolexes or Longines but more of Casios, Seikos and Orienta. I have put some up of them up for sale (to free up space in the watch box) on a local marketplace for some time but no one is biting.

How do you guys price the watches that you want to sell? Especially when they have been only worn once and come with box and all.

Same here. Trying to sell my Seiko Presage GMT now for quite a while. No chance.

For now I only tried two of those small ad portals in Germany and Switzerland.

And my asking price is more than fair.

·

I only have experience with selling 2 G-Shock Squares and I shaved off like 30% of what I paid back in the days. To be fair, I wore it more often than once but also with no sign of wear and tear. I sat on it between 2 weeks and 2 months after put it up on sale on something similar to eBay. I hope this helps. Which models are you selling? Rather popular ones or not?

·

If you're attempting to obtain anything near to what you paid for your watches you can pretty much forget it. Especially on sites like eBay, Marktplaats and Farcebook market place..

·

I’ve never managed to sell a watch.

·

It's hard, especially because you are probably selling at a loss, plus the cost of postage and the hassle of selling them, it makes the whole endeavour not worthwhile. You may as well spend a few dollars to get a watch box and put them there for safe keeping 🤷

·

Well you can try to make a bundle and sell them a little more discounted but in a pack, or either drop the price significantly. To put you into perspective I am eyeing Certina DS Action, and a brand new one is around 800€, on some stores you can find it discounted for 720€ but on second hand market, unworn with all the papers amd still on warranty is like 550-600€, so more than 25% off. I guess that’s what you cam aim to sell them for

·

Also There are tons of vintage Orient watches on the second hand market so it makes it difficult for interested people to get to your watch, I personally dont even look at orients just because to find a bambino or kamasu I have to go through dozens of overpriced refurbished old Orients

·

Unfortunately the reality at this time is that it's the worst time to be selling a watch in years, irrespective of condition, papers, box etc. There's huge supply out there & the only way you'll grab some attention from prospective buyers as they scroll through pages & pages of watches is your price.

I say this from my own experience prior to Christmas where I sold 10 of my watches. How did I manage to sell 10? I took a significant hit on price I'm afraid. Selling more than a couple concurrently is time consuming & a drain on your patience. There are many, many chancers out there willing to waste your time before offering low ball numbers that will do nothing other than anger you.

If you don't need the money, my advice would be to hold on to your watches until we see a more +ve trading environment. If you must rid, be prepared to have your trousers taken down.

·

I don’t really sell watches, but especially from brands which are available everywhere like the once you’re trying to sell I only consider buying those at 50% off the original price. I’m sorry to say it that bluntly.

So what I usually do is look for good trades for the watches I don’t enjoy anymore.

·

I’ve found it’s the more expensive ones that it is difficult to shift. I put my Laco on eBay when it was no more than 4 months old and in perfect condition. At 30% then 40% off retail it didn’t attract any interest at all.

Conversely, I’ve sold about 10 watches on eBay in the £300 to £1,000 range. Almost always at a loss (especially after fees), but they’ve usually sold within 3 weeks or so. People do want to feel that they have a bargain.

I think Chrono24 is more for the enthusiasts. Although what comes with that is the asking prices, which in my view are highly aspirational. Certainly not “priced to sell”!

·

I do lots of trades on Facebook forums.

I've just posted a Zelos Swordfish Ti I hated, & am waiting for delivery of an Alkin model 2 I've swapped it for.

Done literally dozens of swaps/sales on there and never been ripped off

·

Give them away as presents. You'll Save a few $ and no hassle.

·

I’ve been in the same situation. What I did was put all these watches in a box I refer to as my shitter watch box. It contains cheap Casios, old gifted watches, watches I never wear with sentimental value, etc. Everytime I think of making a purchase I refer to my shitter box and think hard if I’m throwing money away

·

Selling anything others collect is difficult right now. Lots of people bought stuff during covid and lots of them realized that they bought way more than they should have. They only exception I came across is selling relatively new things which are still hyped but can’t be bought anymore. Lots of flippers are sitting on their stuff😆

Man… that is bleak!

I imagine you one day uploading a YouTube video consisting of 2 minutes of you staring into your shitter box, with mournful music playing over the top. As a lesson to us all!

·

I can't even give them away.

·

Never heard of this selling thing you speak of. Sounds really rare like me ordering a salad at the steakhouse. 😂😂

·

Sometimes giving watches away to friend and family is a great way to thin your box of lower end pieces. Also, local groups that help disadvantaged youth or graduates get suits, ties, shoes etc for interviews and first jobs might be a place to find young men and women who would cherish a nice watch.

I’m at the verge of putting 5-6 on eBay and I’m anticipating the same results. I’d love if we had a trade or buy section of Watch crunch, though I certainly understand the reasons not to.

·

From my experience buying used watches

CW Dartmouth new £1000 I paid £525

Seiko kinetic tuna new £700ish I paid £225

Seiko chronograph new £400ish I paid £135

In my experience only watches with limited availability for whatever reason hold their value well.

·

You can take a large batch to a local pawn shop. They prefer to buy in quantity rather than individual in that price range. You won't make a ton of money, but you won't be at $0.00 either and they will be gone.

The other thing is you may be able to give them a few different types of watches and trade in for something they might have that piques your curiosity. 6 mid range watches may= 1 luxury watch?!🤔

Actually it's not a bad idea, allows people to enjoy the watches that they may not be able to get their hands on. But yea, easy to be abused

Remember to a 'raindrops against the window pane' filter for the vid!

Always easier to buy ( and hoard) than to liquidate😢
