Hamilton / Pilot Pioneer

So I have a Khaki Field Mechanical... but have been thinking about "upgrading" to the Pilot Pioneer. Does anyone have experience with this watch? I'm hesitating because of the size and crystal. It also seems overpriced to me (although I'm seeing it for $600-650 now). Does it wear small and is it getting too scratched up? I'm curious... but it looks so nice.

I don't have personal experience but it does look nice

Great, iconic design with dimensions that are period correct. Might wear small for those with no experience living in the 20th century. Mine on a 7 1/4 inch wrist.

Looks great! And the crystal is holding up ok?

Of course it is overpriced. I had a W10 replica many years back and I considered it massive, so it's funny that people think it is small nowadays.

I doubt there will be any issues with the crystal, but your are not in a remote area and it's not an odd shape. If you really must, at any point, the crystal can be replaced or "upgraded" at minimal expense.

I love mine. My wrist is 6.75 and It doesn’t seem toosmall to me, although it is one of my smaller watches. I’d try one on if you can. Only you’ll know if you feel it’s too small for you.

Crystal is fine.

I won't call it an upgrade if you are going from a Khaki Field Mechanical. The specs are the same except for the mineral crystal. Its is quite small and recommend you trying it in person.

And you can find these for even lower than $600. Definitely overpriced at retail and even after some discounts. Right now you may find good deals.

Same size wrist, sounds like there is a new hamilton shop about an hour from me, so I might try.

The Pilot also has an extra 50m of WR on the Field Mechanical and some AR coating on the crystal. Mineral and 100m WR vs Sapphire and 50m.

Happy for the variety of specs but it's mildly infuriating that they can't manage to take the best of both of these and make the one watch to rule them all. The thin case of the Field mechanical, sapphire, AR underside, 100m wr. They'd fly off the shelves. 💸

I had one for a while. Great watch! Movement is phenomenal. Looks amazing - especially during direct sunlight! It is absolutely a strap monster. Its fantastic. Doesn’t get scratched up in my experience.

If you’re considering I say go for it. Check jomashop

Ps the only reason I sold it was because I was because I was switching watch styles.

I absolutely love mine. I've owned the khaki field mechanical and found that despite the 38mm size, the lug to lug was so long that it made the watch wear much larger, also i hated the gap I got when fitting the KFM with 2 piece straps due to it lug tips.

The pilot in terms of case finishing, dial and overall aesthetic blows the KFM out the water. The only downside is the mineral crystal, but I personally have had no issues 2 months in wearing it nearly everyday. Despite the inferior crystal, it's clarity in comparison to the KFM is miles better with a generous AR coating application. I also prefer the textured dial which to me gives the dial more depth and character and the the domed crystal distorts the dial and light in some awesome ways. Anyways I can't say enough good about this watch, don't let the crystal deter you, it hasn't left my wrist in months and I have zero regrets.

I have a 17cm wristsize and found the watch too small. Sold it. But, looks very nice on a nato.

I haven’t owned one but I’ve tried them on. I didn’t expect to like the silver dial because the pictures don’t capture it; but the silver color combined with the texture give the dial some awesome light play. Try to see it in person if you can!

That Bund strap is perfect 👍

I love the Khaki Field Mechanical and it's constantly on my "shopping list", as it's probably the best modern version of the legendary W10 one can buy today. I'm also not super excited about the miner crystal, but it's something you can replace if you mess it up badly.

You might also consider this alternative by CWC https://www.cwcwatch.com/products/cwc-navigator-mechanical-hand-wound-gs-watch-1970-pattern I think it's lovely and definitely looks a bit more vintage. It has an acrylic glass, so it'd be easier to "fix" if you scratch and it will look extra bad-ass.
