First World Problem

This is definitely aimed at those with too much time on their hands, figuratively and literally (that's us). I'd like to see a man-on-the-street video where the m-o-t-s asks people how many watch brands they can name. That's all. No research, no follow-up, not trying to prove a point, I think it would just be fun to know. Has anyone ever seen such a video? Would you like to? Could that somehow be a future WC video? What say you?

U will get 2. Apple and Rolex. What more do you expect? Well May be they will name Rolex even if they are wearing an Apple Watch.

Maybe Omega because of James Bond

See that's just it. I expect nothing. I have no idea, that's why I'd want to see a video like this. Maybe the average person could also pull out Casio and/or Timex. But woe to the guy holding the microphone if he runs into one of us.

If I absolutely had to guess, I'd say most would say zero. I've seen videos where people were asked to name one book and couldn't do it.

I think it depends on the age of the person you ask. Those over 40 I would say know more brands on average as they are like to have NEEDED a watch at one point in their life.

I second Timex and Casio as runner-ups to Rolex and Apple.

That is an excellent point. See how much I'm learning already? And we don't even have the video yet. We would hope our Man on the Street interviewer would approach people of all ages. And you've led me on to another thought that I hadn't considered (see how this works?) - younger people might actually come up with Swatch, DW, Fossil, or MVMT.

I grew up in the 60s and indeed had a watch as a child because I needed one. And I wasn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, but I did pay attention to watch advertising from back then, because it was all over TV and print media. I can still remember ads for Timex, Bulova, Accutron, Caravelle, Hamilton, Heuer, Seiko, and Rolex. Today, if I could make the hands on my watch go backwards and take me back to the 1960s, even as a child I would have some answers for our Interviewer, assuming he could make his watch go backwards and end up in the 1960s too.

Timex takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

This would make a great question for Pointless.

I think we on WC know lots of brands, but I would not have thought of Apple.

Really? Huh. Where I live, almost everyone wears Apple Watches.

Outside the US it would be casio

Thank you. I like Casio, have three of them. Maybe inside the US some people could name them as well?

I've actually always wanted to do a video segment on this exact idea - there are variations of this, not with watches, but I believe one of the marketing folks from LuxuryBazaar (I think Tina is her name?) actually did this on one of their social accounts, with a twist. It was "for each watch component that you can name, you get $10 to keep" or something to that effect. She was in a mall, walked up to random people and gave them the pitch - I don't know how many people she talked to, or what the outcome was...but I guess stay tuned to my YouTube channel and you may just see this premise pop up 😀👍

Indeed it is, Sir. And it was so obvious. There it was on our wrists the whole time. My friends, we're done here. Not just with this post, and my other posts, but everybody else's posts and indeed the whole WatchCrunch site as well. What further need have we of questions? Seiko IS the answer.

To James The Timist: Just what I need, another watch channel. But seriously, I already think yours is seriously good. Thank you for the link. I watched the Oris video and it looked great on my computer. The Oris photography was beautiful, as was the wildfire segment. I liked your serious, no nonsense commentary. I thought, he's just a bit dry, but that's all right because a lot of watch channels try too hard to be funny. I think the only truly funny watch guy is The Mad Watch Collector, and he's not trying to be funny - he just IS.

Then I watched your short Lies Watch Collectors Tell Ourselves and LAUGHED OUT LOUD at the McNuggets/Tank formal dinner. The dive watch, aviation watch, and Chrono bits were good as well. But I sort of didn't get the whole premise. That looked like real life to me. I kept waiting and waiting. Where were the lies?

And for me the true test of a video is if I like it even if I don't completely relate to it. The Oris is out of my price range, although put that dial on a $200 watch and I'm in. If you've seen any of my posts on WC, I have 30 watches, none above $180. But I truly love almost all watches, and really enjoyed your Oris review. I didn't see any specs printed on the screen, but maybe I missed that. I sort of know what they are anyway.

I also have a short attention span towards what I call Big Conservation. Man just has to be a reasonable good steward. In every conflict between Man's attempts to cause damage to the Earth and the Earth's ability to shrug Man off and continually heal itself, the Earth will win every time. I do volunteer work in my hometown, trying to get people jobs and save on their electric bills, which have artificially skyrocketed due to govt. constraints. There's real suffering at street level, caused by Man restricting energy use instead of allowing it. And if Oris was really that concerned they would go out of business all together to save resources because they are producing what are luxury items and we might need said resources one day just to survive. But if we ever get that artificially hysterical where a guy can't have a little wristwatch for himself, I'm going to go stand in my yard and wait for the Trumpet Blast.

Thank you so much. I will be tuning into your channel. I would like to see it on television as well, but I don't know the ins and outs of that. Maybe one day you'll be as successful as Mr. Beast, and you can hand out Rolexes and JLCs and Cartiers to anyone who can tell the analog time on the watch face. Hey, how come he hasn't done this yet?

Haha, glad you enjoyed some of my work, it's a passion project and something I do for fun. I don't consider myself a "YouTuber" but rather something I can engage with in a way flex and express my creativity.

The Mad Watch Collector AKA @MWC2020 here on WC is aces, funny, and super informative whilst being his true self - and that's rare!

Thanks for watching the Oris video, I had fun making it! The specs are talked through and listed on-screen between the 1:15 and 2:00 min mark 🙂

Glad you found my "lies we tell ourselves" bit, someone left a comment about the "field watch we must buy because of all the hiking we do...on our way to the fridge" and that one got me laughing out loud 😂

As a whole I truly believe it doesn't matter what watches we have, their values, or their provenance, it's the mere fact that we enjoy watches as a collective and we have a cool space like WC thanks to @Max & Team for us to share our passion of the watch world with like-minded people 👍

Oh, and if I somehow do turn into the Mr. Beast of the watch world, everyone is getting a sick watch for Christmas 😜👍
