Question for the Lefties of WatchCrunch

On which hand do you wear your watch?

Traditional rule of thumb is to wear the watch on your non-dominant hand, which would mean for a left-handed person, on the right.

Up until a few years ago, as a leftie I followed this rule and wore my watch on the right until I came to the following realizations:

  1. Lefties still have to live in a right-handed world so we still have to use our right hands a lot more than righties need to use their left hands.  For example, doors are typically designed to be opened by one’s right hand.  Net-net the odds of banging your watch against something is still high even though you’re wearing your watch on your right hand.
  2. Even though I’m left handed, I mouse with my right hand.  Over the last 10 years or so I’ve used a keyboard and mouse at work almost exclusively at work and rarely write things down by hand.  I realized that most of the “desk diving” scratches and swirls on my bracelet was due to the fact that I was banging and dragging my watch around with my mouse.  Once I moved my watches to the left, I I saw a noticeable decrease in scratches on the bracelet clasps.

So my sinister friends, raise your (left) hand proudly and share your thoughts!

Edit: Bonus Issue #3 - Another reason why I switched to wearing the watch on my left hand is because I wear my wedding band on my left hand.  After a few wince inducing scratches from banging or scraping the ring against a watch, I realized I needed to wear both the ring and watch on the same hand.

Leftie here,

Since I've started to use watches, it always has been on my right wrist, and you're right, mousing with the right with a watch on is a drag!!!

So a solution with that, is to take the watch out while using the computer, idk, it's like a routine for me, when I take it off, it's my way to make me more productive and to start my work for the day.

Cheers

Lefty here and I wear my watch on my right.  I have tried a few times to wear it on my left, but I cant.  After about an hour I switch it back.

It takes a few weeks of awkwardness and adjustment to switch hands, for sure but for me it was worth it.

It just feels too awkward.

Part of my daily pleasures is picking out my watch buddy to take to the office… well at least that was the case during the Beforetimes.  During the age of COVID, I still pick out a work watch to wear during ”office hours” as part of my daily routine.

In that context, I don’t think I’d ever consider taking off my watch, especially outside the house after reading the recent post on Reddit about the guy who lost his Daytona at the airport after he took it off to do some work on his laptop.  :)

As a lefty, I've always worn my proper watch on my right wrist. It has never felt "right" on my left wrist. What I have worn on my left wrist the last several years is some type of fitness band. In the past it's been a Fitbit, but for the last year it's been an Apple Watch. So technically I am wearing a watch on my left wrist, but I don't use it for the timekeeping function.

·

Ambidextrous right dominant that wears a watch on their right wrist. I sometimes also have to take my watch off when I use a mouse for a while. Especially at home as the wrist pad I have annoyingly stains any light coloured strap I might have. At the office it depends.

I know what you mean about the issue of opening doors (due to a right handed world). Although I also now wear a fitness band on my left wrist and that took me a while to get used to, as I kept knocking it on things at first as I wasn't use to having to give extra room, whereas I subconsciously know to consider that there is a watch on my right.

·

Lefty here. Wearing my watches on left hand. Mouse in both hands (morning right, afternoon left), scissors only with right hand, kicking the ball with left foot, eating like a righty ... kind of everything. That is what makes us SPECIAL !! 😜

·

LEFTIES UNITE!!!

I’m a right wrist guy. Feels super weird to have it on the left. Feels like some extra heft that gets in the way when I’m writing stuff down.

·

I wear my watch on my left wrist, I miss it when I am not wearing a watch even at home

·

I'm a lefty, wear it on my left wrist, and was quite blissfully unaware I was breaking some sort of tradition.

😉

·

Being a lefty is a bugger when you’re writing in ink…

·

Leftie here. I wear mine on my right wrist because it feels proper to me that way. Not really sure why. A watch feels "weird" on my left arm.

·

Lefty, I wear watches on my right wrist. I tried the left once but it just feels wrong. I also use my mouse with my left, so I don't have to worry about it dragging on my desk.

·

Hi.  I'm Kris, and I'm a lefty.

Actually, @s0ckpupp3t , your three issues resonate very well with me.  I wear on my left hand, so banging it on a right-handed's world, mousing with my right hand, etc...all reasons I wear on my left.  The wedding band is actually a great point, and fashion might be the best.  I have a dark silicone ring for when I'm wearing a nato or rubber strap, and my silver band for when I'm sporting a bracelet.

Leftys unite!

·

as a leftie i wear it on the left. feels weird if it is on the right.

·

As a leftie I only wear on the right , tried left and it’s just weird. that said I eat with my fork in the left and like you I can use a mouse in both hands.

there are a few left handed watches out there. My right handed friend owns a left handed Tudor Pelagos!

Off topic but you know, I should try using the mouse left handed.  Might help with my RSI/tendonitis (repetative strain injury).  I guess I would need to find a good ambidextrous mouse. :)

·

The struggle is real LOL 😜

·

My mother was ambidextrous (both left and right-handed) and when she taught me to use cutlery, she put the knife in my left hand and the fork in my right. When she put my first watch on my wrist, it was the right wrist - I've worn it on the right wrist since I was about 10 and it hasn't been a problem.

Nowadays I wear a fitness watch on my left wrist and although it has a time-keeping capability, I can't give up my watches. If I don't wear one, I feel naked.

·

I’m with you.  If I consider it from the perspective of which wrist is more likely to bang into something and potentially damage a watch, it’s my right — I mouse with my right hand, (perhaps I’m a freak but) my right arm swings around more when I walk, I have to open doors with my right, etc.

·

I respect you lefties for living in a right-handed world.  I don’t know how you do it.  I’m a rightie, and my left hand is little better than a flipper!😕

@Lbakken , thank you for being an ally and acknowledging your right-handed privilege. 😉

Not gonna lie to you mate when I read the title I thought "wow it didn't take long for Watchcrunch to get political" 🤣🤣

Oh yes! One day we will rise up!  There’s a reason why “sinister“ means left-handed in Latin.  😜

·

I'm a rightie and have always worn my watches on the right wrist. The left feels so awkward and just viscerally weird - no disrespect to left wristies😜

I say damn their eyes!

You wear it on whichever wrist feels most comfortable!

So this is why all my watches look banged up!!!!!

·

Leftie here, always have worn my watch on the right. Also use my mouse on the left. The IT guy at my university hates this, whenever he worked on my compute, he always said ‘this is better than a #$&* password!’  I showed him how to switch mouse ’handedness’. He actually didn’t know as he’d never tried! 😏

Sorry to join the lefty party so late, but just saw this.  I agree with all your reasons and also wear it on my left hand.  We are indoctrinated by a right hand world, often at an early age.

In kindergarten, I was ambidextrous, writing equally poorly with each hand. That is, until my brutish teacher forced me to pick a hand (still not sure why, but it was a religious school, so playing on both teams was frowned upon).  I proclaimed I wanted to be right-handed like everyone else - but my knowledge of right and left was wrong, so I picked the wrong "right" hand. 😜

LOL, I bet not many actually get to choose.  It was fate that you became one of us!
