In Memoriam: Gone (or going) but not forgotten...

One of my goals this year was to reduce my watch collection down to only those watches that I wear regularly.  There are, of course, some obvious sentimental exceptions (first work watch, wedding watch, etc. -- all Movado, go figure).

After stewing over it for so many months, over the past weekend I went on a selling spree and posted 4 watches for sale on eBay and sold 3 within 24 hours.  I guess I priced them way too low 🙄 but nonetheless glad they have found new homes rather than languishing in my watch box.

For those who are interested, below are my brief thoughts on each watch and why I’m letting them go.  Would love to hear from you all on your thought processes and experiences selling watches from your collection.  Are you sentimentally attached as a hoarder and find it hard to let go or is it strictly business as a flipper?

Seiko SARG005, my first mechanical watch.  I love the field watch looks and Alpinist style compass bezel but never fully bonded with it due to accuracy issues.  It's still within Seiko's spec of -15 to +25 seconds/day but I’ve learned it’s not good enough for me.  My Speedmaster Pro's average accuracy of +0.3 seconds/day has completely spoiled me and was the final nail in the Seiko's coffin.

Citizen Promaster GMT Titanium Diver (BJ7111-86L).  I realized after getting this watch that I like to use my divers as pure beaters.  This one is a little too nice for me to do that and at a height of 13.8mm, it sat a little too tall on my skinny wrist and caught on things which is also bad for a beater.

Casio G-SHOCK (GW-5000U-1JF).  I think this JDM model is the best looking of the resin squares but it hardly got any wrist time after I got the GMW-B5000TVA titanium square.  Also too nice to relegate it to a beater watch.

Citizen Nighthawk (BJ701059E).  I think this JDM version is a lot classier than the US one but it’s completely overshadowed in my collection by its Blue Angels edition sibling so I am letting it go.  No takers on this one yet, which is a little surprising since I thought it would be one of the first to get sold.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk. 😀

I see regret in your future. not now but later.

There are many watches that I miss when I scroll back and watch old photos on insta. But I don't really miss them. There was something I didn't like about them in some shape or form. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug 🤣 G-Shock dw5900 is the only watch I've rebought so far.

All rise for the traditional 21 tick salute

I’ve just been on two other threads about this very subject, now and again I have the urge to purge , I’ve done it many times, down to 3 is my record. I’ve been back up to 20 after a feeding frenzy, back down to 5, back to 15, blah blah it never seems to end well either, always some remorse somewhere along the line, in fact I’ve only just listed seven for sale on eBay, done the description, taken the photos, and I just can’t do it. I’m at a current position of 12, and I can’t see any weakness or dislikes. What a bloody stupid hobby this is,

I have attempted to reduce my numbers.  In my head, I feel like a 12 watch collection would be perfect for me.  About 3 months ago I sold a bunch on eBay, and gifted several as well.  The problem is, I get a lot of "oh, I need that one for sure!".  I am still quite below my peak numbers but I'm close to admitting that I'll never get down to 12.

Don't go down the re-buy rabbit hole !

·

I had a similar plan so I sold off a couple of watches recently, but I made the mistake and watching the sales pages and bought something new..

·

Those watches are all class.

·

Good plan, now if I could only listen to you!! 🥴

It’s mad…. Pure and simple if I won a lot of money I’d be like a child in a sweet shop, I’m 60 years old for gods sake, I should be doing some gardening or things older people do, instead I’m in the gym and buying bloody watches.

Sounds like a metaphor for friendships — you’ve gained and lost along the way.

Ha! I don't consider my gw-m5610 a beater either! It's too cool for me to relegate it to wearing to work a lot of time. I'm surprised that nighthawk didn't go, it's really sharp!

You are definitely an inspiration. I have GOT to get off my rear and start selling some pieces.

Yes, the struggle is real for those of us in the #ittybittywristcommittee.  😉
