Cartier Santos... tried this today and loved it. Is this a dress or a sports watch?

I have been interested in the Cartier design for along time and managed to try this today. This is the large model 40mm, what do you think? Is this a sports or a dress watch? Am looking to wear this in a office environment. Also does this look too big, maybe I should try the medium at 35mm.

More dress than sport. But a rubber strap tones down the bling like on my Santos 100 XL…

Looking good. Buddy!

I wear my Santos medium to the office daily. Works perfectly on both metal and leather. I think the large is too big for a Santos and a Cartier in general. Historically they have always been on the smaller side and I prefer them that way. But each to their own.

Ah it looks great... does it scratch easy?

Medium is perfect. Good for all occasions. Fun for the whole family etc

·

I think that looks unnaturally large.

·

That's the best part, you can use it as both

·

Yes. It's both.

·

I have a 17.5cm wrist and I got the medium Santos! It's a bit on the dressy side for a sports watch

·

Dress. Yes, you can wear it as sport, but it scratches when you breath on it.

Thanks! The large just isn't for me. The bling on the medium is just right ✨️

Yeah the AD suggested the large for me but I just noticed the medium doesn't have a date window which actually makes the watch look a lot cleaner!

Medium

·

I think it looks huge and you should opt for the medium

·

Does it matter if it’s dress or sports? Can’t it be a versatile watch?

·

If I had it, I'd have a heck of a lot of fun dressing it with some very posh, sporty summer looks but it requires some effort.

·

Neither, it’s a pilot’s watch

The Santos is a gorgeous watch, but a bit of a scratch magnet. I personally think that the white dial version leans a bit more to the dressy side, but can still easily be worn casually. I opted for the black dial version with ADLC bezel since I felt the bezel would resist scratches (it has), and I feel it's more versatile in terms of being both dressy and sporty (plus it has lume). FWIW, mine is the large, and my wrist size is 17cm (6.75"). I feel that the size is appropriate for my wrist.

Wow... black dial looks cool!

·

I think that it has the spirit of both dress and sports… Veratility perhaps is the right word. Choose the right strap to pair it with and it becomes incredibly sporty or simply elegant. Also, I’d go for the medium…

It's not in person. It's hard to capture the Santos' proportions (or any watch) when it's strapped on one arm and the other's trying to take a picture of it. 😁

It does but I knew that going in.

I bought my first Santos in the late 80s, wore it for all events, felt a bit small. My wife wears it these days. Bought a Santos 100XL roughly 15 years ago fitted to a black croco strap and Cartier clasp, quite dressy so I wear the watch to weddings and after covid to a few too many funerals. My most recent Santos is the current model which I opted for with the blue dial in large which admittedly is sporty even when fitted to the blue calf strap included with the purchase.

A few years ago, my wife and I decided to plan a spontaneous weekend trip to Manhattan during the American Turkey Holiday, trying out the luxurious dim sum at a eatery recommended by a friend who visits New York often. During our lunch I received a lesson in proper sizes of Cartier watches from a slightly inebriated fella who had on a gorgeous lady’s gold Tank while his husband was wearing a smaller Ballon Bleu than the one on my wife’s slender wrist. I was wearing my 48mm Breitling Navitimer 1461 4 year annual calendar watch. They were both large men the watches appeared absurdly small on their wrists but as long as it makes them happy…..

·

Neither proper dress (it’s on a bracelet :) or sports (scratches, wouldn’t wear this on the pitch!) It’s a very good looking watch for most other occasions though 👌🏻

Thanks for sharing this, I think I will need to try out the medium. I have the admit on the photo the large looks a tad big but in real life it felt right. I should have tried the medium whilst I was there... maybe if I get a medium my wife and I can share this time piece, save me buy one for each 😁

Buy the one you feel is right! You are the guy who will be wearing the watch. I love the Santos, the perfect Cartier, perfect watch. Good luck. The medium was too small for my preferences. ❤️

·

It’s both.

·

Santos would go both ways. :)

·

IMO the answers are yes and yes. It is a dress watch or a sports watch 😂and I think the 40 is too large on your wrist. I think the 35 may be a better fit for you. Good luck with your choice. It’s hard to go wrong with Cartier in any case. 🥳

·

More dressy. Size is more what you're comfortable with.
