Christopher Ward Trident ๐Ÿ”ฑ

Calendar day 18 of 24 ๐ŸŽ… CW are a forerunner amongst the new independent watchmakers and the "cut the middleman" microbrands. Delivering actual quality for an affordable price from early on without leaning on stolen designs. Even through the evolution of the popular Trident, the design have been unmistakeble CW all the way. Important for the way forward or just another anonymous microbran?

They look nice in photograph ? ! I have never held one . Hell if i picked it up and it past my own personal litmus test , I would consider one โ€ฆ

I think they still operate with the "directly-to-the-customer"-model aka. only online sales. But all I hear is praise for the brand ๐Ÿ˜Š

ยท

Never really liked this brand. Their designs are a bit boring and the name/logo gives me an ugly Michael Kors vibe.

ยท

I hate to use a stupid term like "future classic" but I'm willing to believe that this falls into "classics aren't appreciated in their day" area.

ยท

If my name is Christopher Ward I wouldn't start a watch company called Christopher Ward. It sounds like a fashion brand. Doesn't has the rings of Rolex, Omega, Seiko or even Farer.

Their watches also lack any distinctiveness.

New logo is OK?

I think there were 3guys that started the company and non of them er named either Christopher or Ward ๐Ÿ˜…

ยท

Lack of brand identity which is overcompensated with the use of too many decorations or different elements that don't go well together.

God no. The pixel one is even worse ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Fighting Words? ๐Ÿฅท

No biggie. Christopher Ward never made any mentions/nods to Britannia so it's kinda odd to see the trident unless he's leaning hard into the Britain based thing.ย

Kinda funny that his biggest seller is a Sealander though. Isn't that the rusting oil rig?ย

Two's a company; three's a crowd.ย

To be fair to them, their watches do have good specs, value for money etc. They ticked all the boxes. Just not the heartstrings.

You're sure??

"Christopher Ward, founded by Christopher Ward, Mike France and Peter Ellis in 2004, is a British watch company. It was the first online-only watch retailer selling timepieces directly to the consumer. Christopher Ward watches are designed in England and manufactured in Switzerland."๐Ÿ˜œ

What?.......Really? Look at their recent productions for the definition of distinctiveness?

I have looked at their recent productions. Their divers look really interchangeable with other brands, and the Bell Canto reminded me of a little Transformer. I know it chimes and all that, but it is an ugly watch visually. Like I said, they made watches with good specs, and good value and ticked a lot of boxes. Some people love them but I think they are meh, just like some people think Rolex, Omega or Seiko are meh. We are allowed to be different.

No, it says the brand "Christopher Ward" was founded by three men, one of whom is named Christopher Ward.ย

They chose Christopher's name because it was the most English sounding name of the three of founders.ย

That's very true! One man's meat is another man's poison and that certainly applies to watches!

ยท

I like mineโ€ฆ. But thereโ€™s no way itโ€™s reached legend or classic status. ย While the case is original the execution isnโ€™t and it just hasnโ€™t been around long enough either. ย As such I chose overrated cause they have a strong customer base. ย So again I like mine but its just a good decent watch.

ยท

Seems alot of us feel the same way. The brand is becoming a legend among microbrands, but the watch is irrelevant as a watch.

Having said what I have said, if someone wants to buy a CW diver over a Seiko spb line of divers, I wouldnโ€™t have anything against them. The CW just offers better value if that is what you are looking for.ย

ยท

Their warranty is outstanding. Their Bel Canto is amazing for the price point and the space it occupies. On its way to becoming a solid independent. I don't love their designs, but they're not poorly designed. Just not my style

I find that they have a distinct identity ๐Ÿค”

How so? What keywords can be used to describe this watch?

If you repeat just those keywords, without mentioning the brand, can another person accurately guess the watch?

  • Dive watch, spinning bezel. -- (Easy, I might not know the name, but it sounds like that Rolex!)
  • Luxury quality, affordable price, Swiss made. -- (Huh, something cheaper than Omega?)
  • Microbrand, cut out the middleman, online-only. -- (What is this, MVMT? Filippo Loretti? From the social media ads? But those are rubbish, and now I'm confused. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ)

How many hints do you need to give to help narrow it down to the right guess?

It's hard to describe. I would say that there linger a flare of 90s swiss entry level over them at the same time looking different than the current competition?

Sounds like a meh watch.

ยท

Owning a CW Trident, I definitely would take their modern "twin flags" logo and their older tear-drop style hands. Still, I think their value is great for their price range. I think their biggest hurdle is getting watches into the hands of prospective buyers, since they're not accessible.ย

One of them was called Christopher Ward, but he has since left the company. Peter Ellis and Mike France were the other two. The latter is now CEO.
